SINGLE DISPLACEMENT REACTION
A single-displacement reaction , also known as a single-replacement reaction , is a type of chemical reaction where an element replaces another element from a compound .
A + B C Here, A replaces B in the compound B C . B + A C
METALS AND NONMETALS
A more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal. A more reactive nonmetal replaces a less reactive nonmetal.
In the periodic table, we can see where the metals and nonmetals are located. The metals are located on the left side of the stairs and the nonmetals are located on the right side of the stairs.
METALS NONMETALS
ACTIVITY SERIES OF METALS AND NONMETALS
The more reactive element takes the place or replace the less reactive element in a compound.
Li , Rb , K , Cs , Ba , Sr , Ca , Na , Mg , Al , Mn , Zn , Fe , Sn , Pb , H , Cu , Ag , Au , Pt ACTIVITY SERIES OF METALS AND HYDROGEN MOST REACTIVE LEAST REACTIVE
F , Cl , Br = O , I , S ACTIVITY SERIES OF NONMETALS MOST REACTIVE LEAST REACTIVE
HOW TO COMPLETE A SINGLE DISPLACEMENT REACTION
DETERMINE IF THE REACTION WILL OCCUR. The reaction will only proceed if the element that replaces the original element is more reactive. Can Cl replace K ? or Br ? 1
Cl 2 + K Br ? ? Cl is a nonmetal element and K is a metal element. They are not replaceable. Take note: The replacement is for metals to metals and nonmetals to nonmetals only.
Cl 2 +K Br ? ? Let’s take a look on their activity series.
F , Cl , Br = O , I , S MOST REACTIVE LEAST REACTIVE
DETERMINE THE PRODUCTS. The product is when the elements are already replaced. 2
Cl 2 +K Br Br 2 +K Cl
DISTRIBUTE THE ELEMENTS . Distribute the elements in a compound. Before and after you replaced them. 3
Cl 2 + K Br 2 Cl + 1 K 1 Br Br 2 + K Cl 2 Br + 1 K 1 Cl
COMBINE THE ELEMENTS YOU DISTRIBUTED (STEP 3) . Add the distributed number of elements for the final reaction. 4
Cl 2 + K Br 2 Cl 1 K 1 Br 2Cl 2KBr Br 2 + K Cl 2 Br 1 K 1 Cl 2Br 2KCl
2Cl 2KBr 2Br 2KCl
DISTRIBUTE THE FINAL REACTION . Distribute the way you distribute (STEP 3). 5
