Snake Bite, Scorpion Sting & Insect Bite Safety Awareness Health & Safety Training Module

Introduction Why bite/sting awareness is important High-risk occupations & environments Common regions with high incident rates

Snake Bites - Overview Types of venomous snakes (cobra, viper, krait) Symptoms: pain, swelling, discoloration, nausea Time is critical for treatment

Snake Bites - Overview Saw Scaled Viper Common Krait Spectacled Cobra Russell’s Viper

First Aid for Snake Bite Local bleeding from fang marks Local swelling and bruising along with blistering Tissue necrosis

Broken Neck Sign in Russel”s Viper Bite

management First aid treatment Transport to hospital Rapid clinical assessment and resuscitation Detailed clinical assessment and species diagnosis Investigations/laboratory tests Antivenom treatment Observation of the response to antivenom: decision about the need for further dose(s) of antivenom Supportive/ancillary treatment

management Treatment of the bitten part Rehabilitation Treatment of chronic complications

First Aid for Snake Bite Stay calm and limit movement Keep the affected limb immobilized Do not cut, suck or apply ice Seek medical help immediately

Scorpion Sting & Insect Bite Safety Awareness - Overview

Scorpion Stings - Overview Common scorpion species in the region Symptoms: intense pain, numbness, drooling, muscle twitching Fatal stings are rare but possible in children

Scorpion Stings - Overview

First Aid for Scorpion Sting Wash the area with soap and water Apply a cold pack to reduce pain Do not consume alcohol or sedatives Monitor for severe allergic reactions

1. Stay Calm & Keep Still Reassure the victim and keep them calm — panic increases heart rate, which can spread the venom faster. Keep the affected part below heart level if possible. 2. Move to a Safe Area Get away from the scorpion to avoid additional stings. If indoors, check surroundings to prevent others from being stung. 3. Clean the Sting Site Wash the area with soap and clean water to reduce infection risk. Avoid cutting or sucking the wound. 4. Apply a Cold Pack Place a cold pack or wrapped ice on the sting site for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off . This helps reduce pain and swelling. ❌ Don’t put ice directly on the skin for long periods (risk of frostbite). 6. Pain Relief If needed, give paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain. Avoid aspirin in children due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.

7. Watch for Severe Symptoms 🚨 Seek immediate emergency medical help if any of these occur: Difficulty breathing or swallowing Severe muscle twitching or spasms Drooling, blurred vision, or slurred speech Seizures or unconsciousness Extreme pain spreading from the sting site 8. Antivenom In certain regions, hospitals have specific antivenom for dangerous species. Early administration in severe cases can be life-saving. 9. Things to Avoid ❌ Do not try to suck out the venom. ❌ Do not use alcohol on the wound. ❌ Do not apply a tourniquet (can cause more damage). ❌ Do not give food or drink if the victim is unconscious.

Insect Bites - Overview Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, ants, spiders Symptoms: redness, itching, swelling, rash Some insects may transmit diseases (e.g. malaria, dengue)

First Aid for Insect Bites Clean the bite area with antiseptic Apply anti-itch cream or antihistamines Seek medical help for allergic reaction (e.g. anaphylaxis) Avoid scratching to prevent infection

Prevention & Safety Measures Wear boots and gloves in bushy areas Keep workplaces clean and pest-free Use insect repellents and nets Educate workers regularly

Emergency Response Plan Train first responders in bite/sting first aid Have emergency contact numbers visible Ensure availability of first aid kits and anti-venom Report and record all incidents

Summary and Awareness Quick identification and first aid save lives Encourage safety practices in high-risk zones Regular drills and awareness programs are essential
