Scorpion Stings - Overview
First Aid for Scorpion Sting Wash the area with soap and water Apply a cold pack to reduce pain Do not consume alcohol or sedatives Monitor for severe allergic reactions
1. Stay Calm & Keep Still Reassure the victim and keep them calm — panic increases heart rate, which can spread the venom faster. Keep the affected part below heart level if possible. 2. Move to a Safe Area Get away from the scorpion to avoid additional stings. If indoors, check surroundings to prevent others from being stung. 3. Clean the Sting Site Wash the area with soap and clean water to reduce infection risk. Avoid cutting or sucking the wound. 4. Apply a Cold Pack Place a cold pack or wrapped ice on the sting site for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off . This helps reduce pain and swelling. ❌ Don’t put ice directly on the skin for long periods (risk of frostbite). 6. Pain Relief If needed, give paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain. Avoid aspirin in children due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
7. Watch for Severe Symptoms 🚨 Seek immediate emergency medical help if any of these occur: Difficulty breathing or swallowing Severe muscle twitching or spasms Drooling, blurred vision, or slurred speech Seizures or unconsciousness Extreme pain spreading from the sting site 8. Antivenom In certain regions, hospitals have specific antivenom for dangerous species. Early administration in severe cases can be life-saving. 9. Things to Avoid ❌ Do not try to suck out the venom. ❌ Do not use alcohol on the wound. ❌ Do not apply a tourniquet (can cause more damage). ❌ Do not give food or drink if the victim is unconscious.
