SOME PEOPLE NEVER DIE : Some people do a great service to society and work for the welfare of humans. They remain in our minds even after their deaths. Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, etc. are a few names to remember.
SOME PEOPLE NEVER DIE : Abraham Lincoln was born on 18 February, 1809 in a very poor family in the USA. He spent much of his childhood helping his parents in their work. He attended school for less than one full year in his entire life. However, he had a great desire to learn, and was encouraged by his stepmother to read and write. He read the few books he could get, over and over again. At the age of 22, he settled in the state of Illinois. After trying his hand at various jobs, he became a lawyer. He was very successful as a lawyer. At the age of only 25, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives.
SOME PEOPLE NEVER DIE : At that time, slavery was common in the USA. People from Africa, who were called 'Negroes' (a disrespectful term that is no longer used) or 'Blacks', were kept as slaves by the white people. They could be bought and sold in the market. They were treated badly, made to work long hours, and their living conditions were very bad. Lincoln was against slavery. This made him unpopular in the southern states of the USA where people favoured slavery. In 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the USA. After his election, many states in the south wanted to break away from the USA and announced that they would form a separate nation. This led to a war between the northern and southern states, which lasted four years. It is called the American Civil War .
SOME PEOPLE NEVER DIE : The war was won by the northern states backed by Lincoln, and the USA remained a united country. Even before the war ended, Lincoln made an announcement giving freedom to the three million slaves in the USA. Two years later, a law was passed banning slavery in the USA. Lincoln was elected President for the second time. He wanted people to live in peace and unity. He made plans to remove the differences between the northern and southern states. But before he could carry out his plans,he was shot dead by a supporter of the southern states.
SOME PEOPLE NEVER DIE :FACTS Abraham Lincoln’s four sons were Robert Todd Lincoln (1843- 1926); Edward Baker Lincoln (1846-50); William Wallace Lincoln (1850-62); Thomas "Tad" Lincoln (1853-71)] Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died when the family cow ate poisonous white snakeroot plants. She then drank the poisoned milk from the cow and died. At 6 foot, 4 inches, Lincoln was the tallest president. He was the first president to have a beard. Lincoln married Mary Todd on 4 Nov 1842. He was a self-taught lawyer, legislator and vocal opponent of slavery, who was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860
