Speak Up, Speak Well Communication has once been described as “ships passing between islands on a misty sea”. By definition, it is the passing information between two parties, one-to-one, or in teaching, one to groups of varying numbers.

Communication involves several elements: The person with something to communicate: TEACHER The person to whom info is communicated: LEARNER The information to be communicated: MESSAGE The manner of communication: METHOD

The person with something to communicate: THE TEACHER How we learn: Words 7% Tone of Voice 38% Posture and Gesture 55% Facial Expression Eye Contact Smile

Recall: The teacher may teach a little by what he says; he teaches more by what he does; but most by what he is.” -C.B. EAVEY, 1982

The person to whom info is communicated: THE LEARNER Types of Learners Task-oriented students Dependent students Social Students Isolated students Phantom students Alienated students

The information to be communicated: THE MESSAGE Factual vs. Life-related Factual -as in laws and rules for science & mathematics -needs to be learned & remembered Life-Related -needing application with examples and promises

Levels of Learning Rote Recognition Restatement Relation Realization

The manner of communication: THE METHOD Teacher Talk Pupil Participation Tea for Two Colossal Classroom

MANAGING YOUR CLASSROOM (Dynamics of Discipline) What causes discipline problems? The Children The Room The Teacher

1.THE CHILDREN Children when they are restless Suggestions: Overcome with participation such as songs to sing, review games to play, activity while drilling memory verses

Children when they are thoughtless Suggestions: Overcome with teaching the Word by precept and example. Give specific ways children can be kind. Give examples of thoughtful Bible characters.

Children when they are self-centered Suggestions: Overcome with personal counsel and much prayer. Christ is to be preeminent in life, not self. Love thinks of others.

Children when they are malicious Suggestions: Overcome by teaching & living the love of Christ. Constantly pray for this child; he needs God’s help. Trust the Lord to cause the Word of God to work in his heart & bring victory.

2. THE ROOM A disorderly room causes children to be disorderly Too little or too bright a light seat child with backs to the window Room too cold or too hot Chairs the wrong size Remove distractions Minimize disturbance

3. THE TEACHER Poor preparation Lack of organization Failure to gain the attention of the children before you begin Loss of authority Poor speech A bad attitude
