What is Speech Audiometry? It is the measurement of the acuity of hearing through generation of tones of known frequencies and amplitudes. Speech audiometry has become a fundamental tool in hearing-loss assessment. In conjunction with pure-tone audiometry, it can aid in determining the degree and type of hearing loss.
Speech Audiometry Speech Reception Threshold (S.R.T.): Minimum intensity at which 50% of spondee ( disyllable with equal stress) words are correctly identified. Spondaic words are 2-syllable words spoken with equal emphasis on each syllable ( eg , pancake, hardware, playground).
Speech Audiometry Speech Discrimination Score (S.D.S.): Percentage of phonetically balanced (single syllable) words correctly identified at 40 dB above S.R.T.
Speech Audiometry Indications Differ b/w cochlear & retro-cochlear lesions. Assessment of degree and type of hearing loss Examination of word recognition abilities Examination of discomfort or tolerance to speech stimuli
