At SGA, find out the members of your group. The group agrees on an introductory topic related to your major. For example, if your major is in Agronomy, you might want to choose the topic “Plant Disease and Insects”. Download a book in English with the title “Introduction to…”, “Fundamentals of…”, or “Essentials of…”, so you can use authentic technical terms used in your field of study. Then you can research on the web more about your selected topic. INSTRUCTIONS

Content Introduction Plant diseases Plant pathogens Insects Agricultural Pest Management Systems
Introduction Diseases and insects damage plants and have a detrimental impact on the profitability of crop production. Macro- and microorganisms—and sometimes specialized parasites—can cause plant diseases. Insects damage plants by consuming them and can also be vectors of plant diseases. By identifying the plant disease or insect pest, appropriate cost-effective and environmentally friendly management strategies can be implemented.
Plant diseases A plant disease is broadly defined as a progressive deviation from a plant’s normal development, appearance, or function. The progressive nature of plant disease symptoms differentiates diseases from other types of injury. Plant diseases occur worldwide in many important crops and have significant, negative impacts on global food production and agricultural economies.
Plant diseases For a plant disease to occur, three factors must be present: A susceptible host A pathogen (disease-causing agent), A favorable environment for infection.
Plant diseases Plant diseases can also be caused by abiotic environmental factors such as air pollution, nutrient imbalances, water excesses or deprivation, extreme temperatures, soil acidity or alkalinity, and herbicides. To identify the pathogen and develop a method for disease management, it is important to determine the type of disease, biotic or abiotic, that is present.
