Ranelagh Club in London was founded as a split-off
from Hurlingham club. It had many prominent
military figures and members of royal families.
As the 20th century continued, the club's patronage
diminished and funds dwindled. It closed shortly
before World War II. The clubhouse was burnt down
in 1954. The lake nearby was then drained, and the
site was converted into playing fields.
On July 18, 1878, they organized a match in which they used certain fix
instruments in a historical first, that has become a norm in majority of the
sports nowadays.

This place was first mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy, when it was originally a
Roman settlement known as Vindinum, and later became the capital of the
Cenomani tribe. Over time, the city evolved into a significant urban center in
the medieval period. It was also part of many historical wars during the
Middle ages.
Prior to 1923, the place was an important center for the textile industry and
agriculture that served as the backbone of the economy. Along with all this,

The practice first started in the 5th edition in 1971. It got originated as a
way to avoid confusion due to the mismatch between the season and the
calendar year in which the championship is played. For using this
technique, ensures clarity in the game’s sequence, distinguishing the event
from the corresponding season.
The only instance of this tradition being broken was in 2016, its 50th

Its creation is often credited to Steve Chmelar, a high school student from
Iowa, who crafted the first prototype in 1971. He used paper pieces, pulp
and wire mesh to create an oversized representation, to support his
basketball team.
In 1978, it was commercialized by Geral Fauss, an industrial arts teacher
from Texas. The next year he stopped teaching and started his company to
sell these products.
Since then it has become a staple in American stadiums and many of its
variants got popular in other countries as well.

These huge structures called gasometers, mostly
cylindrical, were prevalent in Europe during the 19th
and early 20th centuries. They were used to store
coal gas (town gas) at low pressure for distribution.
Once a common sight in major European cities, these
are now very rare to find.
The transition from coal gas to natural gas in the 1960s led to their decline.
The UK government in 1990s ordered the dismantling of all gasometers within
the next 10 years. Still a few were kept as heritage landmarks or were
repurposed for new uses.
One such gasometer can be seen near a place which is a historic location for
both cricket and football.

Sir G. Alan X (image) was a baronet born in Istanbul
in 1881. He won the British Chess Championship
twice in 1923 and 1934. He was awarded the
International Master title by FIDE in 1950.
Apart from this, he has also reached the
quarterfinals of the singles and the semifinals of the
men's tennis doubles at Wimbledon in 1911.
He was also instrumental in the foundation of a
sport governing body in 1934.
He never represented England in the Davis Cup. Also he never married so the
hereditary X baronetcy ended on his death. So you might say as a tribute, his name
was immortalized in a different way. India tasted success in that event in the 2020s
