Stages of Sports Writing PRE-GAME DURING POST GAME

What to consider in writing Sports Article? Inverted Pyramid (for game stories): While sports writing allows for more creativity than traditional news, the basic "who, what, when, where, why, and how" should still be quickly established, especially for a game recap. Feature Writing Elements (for profiles/deeper dives): If the contest allows for different types of sports articles (e.g., profiles, columns), you'll need to know how to create a compelling lead, develop a narrative, and weave in observations, emotions, and background. Sports Terminology and Lingo: Using appropriate and colorful sports terms enhances the article's authenticity. Vivid Descriptions: The ability to "paint a picture" with words, describing the action, atmosphere, and emotions of the game or subject. Quoting and Attribution: Knowing how to effectively use direct quotes from players, coaches, and officials, and properly attribute them. Accuracy and Objectivity: Even in sports writing, factual accuracy and fairness are crucial.

Sports Headline: 1. Read the Story Thoroughly: You cannot write a winning headline without fully understanding the article's content and its most important elements. 2. Identify the Main Point: What's the single biggest takeaway? The key event, the final score, the most impactful player, or the historical significance? 3. Brainstorm Keywords: List nouns, verbs, and adjectives related to the story. 4. Draft Multiple Options: Don't settle for the first thing that comes to mind. Write 3-5 different headlines, experimenting with different styles. Refine and Polish: Check for Word Count: Are you within limits? Read Aloud: Does it sound natural? Is it easy to understand? Eliminate Redundancy: Can any words be removed without losing meaning? Active Voice: Generally stronger than passive voice. Focus on the Present Tense: Even if the event happened in the past, headlines often use present tense for immediacy ("Team Wins," not "Team Won"). Use Commas for Clarity (if needed, sparingly): "Star Player Injured, Team Faces Uphill Battle."

Sports Headline: Things to Avoid: Ambiguity: Your headline should not confuse the reader. Sensationalism without Substance: Don't promise drama the story doesn't deliver. Overuse of Punctuation: Generally, only commas and question marks are used. Avoid exclamation points unless specifically allowed and truly warranted. Acronyms without Context: If your target audience might not know an acronym, spell it out. Headlines that are too long or too short: Find the sweet spot for clarity and impact.

Sample Sports Headlines: The Standard (Who Did What): Example: "Blue Eaglets Soar Past Green Archers in Thrilling Finals" Tip: Simple, direct, and effective. Always a safe bet. The Alliteration/Rhyme (Use Sparingly): Example: "Patriots Prevail, Pound Panthers" Tip: Can be catchy but don't force it. It should sound natural and fit the tone. The Pun/Wordplay (Be Clever, Not Corny): Example: "Lions Roar, Leave Rivals Raw" (for a rugby match) Tip: Requires wit and careful consideration. A bad pun is worse than no pun. Ensure the pun makes sense in the context of the sport. 4. The Evocative/Emotional: Example: "Heartbreak for Host as Dreams Crumble" Tip: Focuses on the emotional impact or drama of the event. Good for underdog stories or major upsets. 5. The Question (Intriguing): Example: "Can Titans Tame the Undefeated Dragons?" Tip: Use with caution. The article must then answer the question definitively. 6. The Record-Breaking/Milestone: Example: "Star Striker Nabs Record-Breaking 50th Goal" Tip: Highlights significant achievements. 7. The Figurative Language (Metaphors/Similes): Example: "Warriors Unleash Offensive Barrage" Tip: Adds flair and vivid imagery.

One Secret to Win: Familiarize yourself with AP Stylebook: While not explicitly stated for all DSPC contests, many journalism competitions adhere to AP Style for copyreading and general journalistic conventions.

Familiarize yourself with AP Stylebook: Terminologies of Schools: Adamson University ( AdU ) Ateneo de Manila (ADMU) Schools Mocking Names: BatStateU -Red Spartans UB -Brahmans Mock Names & Jersey No. of Players: #02 Alyssa Valdez “The Phenom” #10 June Mar Fajardo “The Kraken”

Familiarize yourself with AP Stylebook:

Sumaksess Kana? Evaluate your Write-Up: Did I get the essential "who, what, when, where, why, how"? Are my descriptions vivid? Are there good quotes? Is the article engaging and easy to read? Did I avoid clichés? Is it grammatically correct and well-structured? 1 2 3 4 5 6
