TOPIC Adding and Subtracting Decimals through Thousandths Without and With Regrouping

Key Idea To add decimals, align the decimal points in a straight column. Add as in whole numbers. Align the decimal point in the sum with the decimal points in the addends. If the sum of the digits in a place is 10 or more, regroup the decimal. Use the decimal point to separate the whole number from the decimal number in the sum or difference.

Key Idea When subtracting decimals, align first the decimal point, just the same in addition. Regroup the decimal if necessary.

LESSON SHORT REVIEW 3 . 4 5

Alvin walked 0.30 km to Fred’s house, 0.48 km to Dino’s house and 0.50 km to the school gym. How far did Alvin walk? LESSON PURPOSE/ INTENTION

LESSON LANGUAGE PRACTICE Let them share the steps they used to solve the problem.

GUIDED ACTIVITY Find the result when 3.78 is subtracted from 8. 565

GUIDED ACTIVITY What is the sum of 52.763 and 48.92?

GUIDED ACTIVITY What is 92.38 less 48.65?

GUIDED ACTIVITY A pair of rubber shoes cost P320.45. Edelyn has saved only P194.50. How much does she still need to buy the shoes?

GUIDED ACTIVITY Front-End Estimation: Use the whole number part of the decimal first, then adjust. Model examples: 8.92 – 2.31=___ (Round to nearest whole number )

Work in Pairs Ex: Php 12.48 + Php 8.76 + Php 3.29 = ? Ex: 25.83 m – 9.47 m = ?

Ask: “Why do we estimate instead of calculating exactly sometimes?” Lesson Conclusion It can save time and effort

Directions: Read each question carefully. Choose the best answer. Circle the letter of your answer. 1. Estimate the sum of 4.67 + 3.82 by rounding to the nearest tenth. a) 8.4 b) 8.5 c) 8.6 d) 8.7 Assessment

2. Estimate the difference of 9.46 – 4.28 by rounding to the nearest whole number. a) 5 b) 4 c) 6 d) 3 3. You bought two items: one costs ₱7.89 and another costs ₱5.26. Estimate the total cost by rounding to the nearest peso. a) ₱13 b) ₱12 c) ₱14 d) ₱15 Assessment

4. Estimate the sum of 12.48 + 8.76 + 3.29 by rounding each number to the nearest whole number. a) 23 b) 24 c) 25 d) 26 5. A rope measures 15.78 m. You cut off 6.39 m. Estimate how much rope is left by rounding to the nearest tenth. a) 9.3 m b) 9.2 m c) 9.4 m d) 9.5 Assessment

Math Challenge I have ones, tenths and hundreds digits. The sum of my digits is 10. My ones digit is twice as my hundreds digit. My tenths digit is 2 more than my hundredths digit. Round the decimal I have to the nearest tenth.
