ATOPIC DERMATITIS ATOPIC DERMATITIS (AD ) also known as Atopic eczema is an inflammatory , relapsing, non-contagious and itchy skin disorder. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Pattern of atopic eczema varies with age People with Atopic Dermatitis often have dry and scaly skin that spans the entire body, except perhaps the diaper area, and intensely itchy red, splotchy, raised lesions to form in the bends of the arms or legs, face, and neck . These lesions then weep, crack, swell, and crust over. These lesions are at a heightened risk for bacterial , fungal , or viral colonisation . CAUSE The cause of AD is not known, although there is some evidence of genetic factors, and some evidence that growing up in a sanitary environment encourages AD.
CONTACT DERMATITIS Contact dermatitis is a type of skin inflammation . It results from exposure to allergens or irritants . SYMPTOMS Contact dermatitis is a localized rash or irritation of the skin caused by contact with a foreign substance. Only the superficial regions of the skin are affected in contact dermatitis . Inflammation of the affected tissue is present in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) and the outer dermis (the layer beneath the epidermis). Contact dermatitis results in large, burning, and itchy rashes. CAUSES Common causes of allergic contact dermatitis include: nickel , gold and chromium . Millions of cases occur each year in North America alone. Common causes of irritant contact dermatitis include: Solvents Metal working fluids Latex, Kerosene, Ethylene oxide Certain foods and drink Food flavorings and spices Perfume etc.
XEROTIC ECZEMA Xerotic eczema (also known as "Eczema craquelé ", " Pruritus hiemalis ", " Asteatotic eczema", "Winter itch” and "Winter eczema") is a form of eczema that is characterized by changes that occur when skin becomes abnormally dry , itchy , and cracked. Lower legs tend to be especially affected, although it can appear in the underarm area as well. Xerotic eczema is common in elderly people, though it is not uncommon for people in their 20s. It can appear in red, bumpy , pimple -like irritations . Shaving can cause it to become inflamed .
STASIS DERMATITIS (also known as "Congestion eczema," "Gravitational dermatitis," "Gravitational eczema," "Stasis eczema," and "Varicose eczema“) Refers to the skin changes that occur in the leg as a result of "stasis" or blood pooling from insufficient venous return; the alternative name of varicose eczema comes from a common cause of this being varicose veins . Insufficient venous return results in increased pressure in the capillaries with the result that both fluid and cells may "leak" out of the capillaries. This results in red cells breaking down, with iron containing hemosiderin possibly contributing to the pathology of this entity. STASIS DERMATITIS
Symptoms The skin appears thin, brown and tissue-like, with possible skin lesions ( macule or patches), red spots, superficial skin irritation and/or darkening and/or thickening of the skin at the ankles or legs The skin may be weakened and may ulcerate in areas Legs, ankles, or other areas may become swollen Itching and/or leg pains Sometimes pain may persist from swollen tissues and may feel like "stabbing" or "needle pricks"
Provisional diagnosis STASIS DERMATITIS

Management Wear pressure stockings. These tight elastic stockings put pressure on your legs. This improves blood flow and prevents blood from collecting in your legs. Elevate your legs above the level of your heart for 30 minutes, 4 times a day. This will help decrease swelling and pain. Prop your legs on pillows or blankets to keep them elevated comfortably. Exercise regularly. Exercise improves the blood flow in your legs. Apply coconut oil or vaseline to keep your skin moist and decrease itching. Do not scratch your legs: Your skin can break open if you scratch. This can lead to sores or an infection.
