IDEA PAPER (This is a paper I wrote applying for a different
college)
My name is Yile Tian, and I am applying for the Civil
Engineering master's program at Cal Poly Pomona with a focus
on structural engineering.
I came from China and moved to Los Angeles in 2012 with my
family. Looking back at those seven years of adapting and
studying, I am pleased with who I am and the achievement that I
accomplished today. I can still remember the struggle that I
endured during my first year of high school. English is not my
first language; therefore, the language barrier was my first
challenge in my school life. I forced myself to speak up,
discussing with my teachers, and making new friends, so that I
could have a better English learning environment. With two
years of practice, I built up my confidence in speaking and

writing in English and completed all the required courses from
high school. I always manage my time efficiently and find a
balance between my social and study life to fulfill my college
life, making it meaningful and compacted. I pursued my
bachelor's degree at California State University, Los Angeles,
majoring in Civil Engineering. After four years as an
undergraduate student, I found my interest in the subject and
knowledge that I have learned in this major. Not only do I need
to deliver the accurate calculation, but also to carry the
responsibility to paramount the public safety, health, and
welfare. To be a qualified engineer, I need to be serious about
the education that I have already completed and the degree that
I want to pursue in the future. With all the courses I took from
school, I found my passion for structural engineering and
willing to set up my career as a certified engineering designer. I
graduated with an honor of Dean's list for three consecutive
years, and a cum laude in May 2019 with an Overall GPA of
3.70. I especially want to attend Cal Poly Pomona, since we
have an exceptional faculty team and a great learning
environment.
I am confident that Cal Poly Pomona will provide me with a
robust understanding of engineering materials, and get me ready
to step into the engineering field and perform my duty and
responsibility as an engineer. As soon as I choose my path as an
engineer, I set up my career to be a lifetime learner. Since
technology and new code are developing rapidly, keeping my
education is one of the commissions that I should do to refresh
my knowledge. At the same time, I am spending my free time at
BWU structural engineering company to gain more experience
in a related field. The primary responsibility is to help the
engineer preparing the residential floor and roof plan with
AutoCAD. With my engineering analysis skills, I am also able
to help my supervisor with the wind load, beam design, and
retaining wall calculations. I am gaining my engineering
experience in the company and decide to pursue my master's
degree with a structural focus.

The purpose of this statement is applying for the UCLA civil
engineering master's program. After four years as an
undergraduate student at California State University, Los
Angeles majoring in civil engineering. I received an excellent
learning experience from CSULA and would like to pursue a
higher education facility to finish my master's degree with a
focus on structural engineering. I finished all my courses in
civil engineering, and it starts to have a strong connection with
structural engineering. I enjoyed all my designing courses and
took all of the classes with a structural focus.
With a strong fundamental knowledge in structural engineering,
I received the "Engineering-in-Training" certification during my
senior year in CSULA. Furthermore, I am currently preparing
for my professional engineering exam and aiming to pass the
test before my master's graduation.

UCLA is being known as one of the most top learning facilities
for the student who is seeking a quality education experience.
With the optimistic perspectives, students who graduate from
UCLA in any field of the industry could have a better chance of
finding themselves as part of the community and be able to
improve the surrounding with their outstanding performances.
UCLA also earned its reputation as one of the top research-
based universities; students would have sufficient access to
resources, new technologies and types of equipment, and
leading faculties. With all the adequate assistance at UCLA,
numerous well-educated students contributed prominent game-
changing innovations.

I am confident that UCLA will provide me with a robust
understanding of engineering materials and get me ready to step
into the engineering field and fulfill my duty and responsibility
as an engineer.
I love to spend my free time researching new infrastructures,
including all various contemporary buildings and bridges, I am
always impressed by the designers and the numerous amount of
engineering calculations and analysis.
At the same time, I also have a passion for transportation
engineering as my second intended engineering field.
I graduated last year. Asian American scholarship (high school).
Outstanding graduates. GPA (3.7/4.0).
I have Team working skills. Preparing good Presentations.

Interview Paper Prompt

Chathi Anderson | GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE

Achieving communication competence in a culturally
diverse society is necessary for personal and
professional success. One way to enhance our
understanding of communication as a relationship-

building activity is to talk with people from
different cultures. This assignment will give you
the
opportunity to learn about conflict management by
interviewing an individual who belongs to a
different cultural group (or groups) from your own.

Objectives:

• To compare and contrast how your interviewee and
you manage interpersonal conflicts.
• Help you improve your ability to communicate
competently in interpersonal interactions.
• Apply what you have learned in the classroom to
actual communication encounters.

Assignment Prompt:

You will interview one person who belongs to a
cultural group that is different from your own.
You
will ask your interviewee about interpersonal conflict
in his or her culture(s), and how it is
similar
and/or different from your own. You will then use the
results of the interview to analyze how your
own cultural communication practices, with regard to
conflict, compare with those of your
interviewee.

Some of the concepts that you might ask about
in your interviews include:

• culture/society (Ch. 1)
• identities (Ch. 2)
• listening (Ch. 5)
• high-power/low-power distance culture (Ch. 6)
• anything from Chapter 7

You will not be able to include all these topics in
your paper. You are required to include at
least

three topics, but no more than four. Since the content
for these main points will come from your
interview, it is important that you (1) construct your
interview questions carefully, (2) ask your
interviewee to elaborate on various points, and
(3) use paraphrasing and effective listening to
ensure
clarification and understanding. Keep in mind that the
quality of your paper will directly depend on
the
quality of your interview, so plan and prepare
carefully. I recommend you prepare at least
five thought-
provoking,
open-ended questions you would like to ask your
interviewee.

Organization

You should organize your paper into the following
three parts. I have posted an outline
worksheet I
give to my elementary students. Every student
who uses it has amazing introductions…just saying.

I. Introduction: Provide a brief description of your
interview, your interview partner, and
the conflict resolution concepts that you focused on
for this paper. Include a brief preview
of the body of the paper.
Body: Discuss in detail the main points
corresponding to the various communication
topics from your interview. The body is the longest
part of the paper and should
explicitly address the cultural differences and

similarities in interpersonal conflict
management you uncovered in the interview. It is
important that you provide direct

Communication

quotes from your interview partner, as well as direct
quotes or references (and source
citations) from your course textbook to ensure
application of communication concepts in
your paper. However, do not fill your paper with
quotes only. The bulk of your
discussion should focus on your own analytical
voice.

II. Conclusion: Provide a brief summary of your paper.
Discuss your impressions and
observations of the interview and what you learned
about culture and communication from
this assignment.

Evaluation

Papers will be evaluated based on three criteria.
First, papers must demonstrate an
understanding of
communication concepts and principles. Second, papers
must analyze how these communication
topics apply across both your way of dealing
with interpersonal conflict and your interviewee’s
way of
handling conflict. Third, papers must demonstrate

effective writing mechanics and style.

Requirements:

In five to seven pages, provide a thoughtful
analysis of the differences and similarities in
conflict
management that you discussed with your interviewee.
You will need to make explicit connections
between your discussion and communication concepts
and topics we have covered in class. You
will
make these applications by directly referencing
your textbook. Therefore, you will need to provide
in-
text citations and a textbook reference as part of
your paper. If citations are missing, you have
committed plagiarism (don’t panic - we
will discuss correct APA citation methods in
class).

Papers must be in 12-point font, Times New Roman
(or similar font), double-spaced, include page
numbers, and have 1-inch margins on all sides.
Papers must adhere to APA formatting rules,
but you
will not give me a title page. I expect 5 to
7 pages of full text. Here is a link to
the APA Formatting
Guide.
