Storytelling as a Strategy in Genre-Based Language Teaching SEAMEO QITEP in Language Placeholder for Logo By: Susi Fauziah, M.Hum.

Session Objectives • Understand the concept of storytelling in language teaching • Identify its relevance to genre-based pedagogy • Design classroom storytelling activities for various text types

Warm-up Discussion Think-Pair-Share: ‘When was the last time you used storytelling in your classroom?’

What is Storytelling? • Using narratives to convey meaning, values, and knowledge • Integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing • Builds empathy, imagination, and memory

Genre-Based Approach (GBA) • Focus on social purpose, structure, and language features • Four stages: 1. Building Knowledge of the Field 2. Modelling of the Text 3. Joint Construction 4. Independent Construction

Integrating Storytelling in GBA • Building Knowledge: activate schema through stories • Modelling: teacher presents a story exemplifying a genre • Joint Construction: co-create a new story • Independent Construction: students tell or write their own

Storytelling Across Genres Descriptive – describing a place or person through stories Recount – telling personal experiences Narrative – creating imaginative stories Report – factual storytelling Procedure – sequential stories (how-to tales)

Classroom Storytelling Strategies • Teacher-led storytelling • Student retelling • Story chain (each student adds a part) • Picture-based storytelling • Digital storytelling (Canva, Powtoon, etc.)

Example Activity: Descriptive Text Topic: My Favourite Animal 1. Teacher tells a short story about a favourite animal. 2. Students guess and describe. 3. Students write their own version.

Example Activity: Recount Text Topic: My Memorable Day 1. Teacher shares a short experience. 2. Students identify sequence of events. 3. Students write and tell their own recount.

Digital Storytelling • Combine text, image, sound, and video • Use tools: Canva, Animoto, Storybird • Encourages creativity and autonomy

Advantages of Storytelling in Genre Teaching • Boosts engagement and motivation • Provides authentic context for grammar and vocabulary • Builds empathy and cultural understanding

Challenges and Solutions Challenge: Limited time → Use mini-stories Challenge: Passive students → Peer storytelling Challenge: Limited tech → Oral & picture storytelling

Interactive Reflection Reflect: How can storytelling help students grasp the structure and purpose of a genre? Share your insights with your partner.

Mini Activity Design Template Design a storytelling-based genre activity: • Genre type • Learning objectives • Storytelling technique • Steps of activity
