HISTORY OF SAINT BENILDE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Fourteen years ago, Mr. Victorino Medalla suggested to the owner and now
school president, Mr. Wilfredo L. Opulencia, to expand business by putting up a
school since during that time there were only few private schools in the vicinity. A
project study of the place was then immediately conducted by a group composed of
Dr. Juanita Santos, a professor in the Graduate studies of Eulogio Amang Rodriguez
Institute of science and Technology (EARIST), Mr. Victorino Medalla himself and a
number of Project Engineers.

The project study was completed later in the same year. A meeting with the
group, together with Mr. Wilfredo L. Opulencia, was then convened in Calamba
Allied Industrial Corporation, another business property of Mr. Opulencia.

It was then announced that the project was feasible in the area (Opulencia
Compound, Crossing, Calamba City Laguna).

In 2002, all required documents pertinent to putting up the school were filed
at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and to the Department of
Education.

Among the names considered to bear the school name were Calamba
Academy and Saint Benilde Academy. Benilde was used in the memory of the school
owner’s great grandmother whose name was Benilda. None of the names however,
was approved by the SEC since the names have been used in or are close to the
school names used in Metro Manila. It was then that the name Saint Benilde
Academy was modified to Saint Benilde International School (Calamba), Inc.

1

In June 4, 2002, the SEC granted the Certificate of Incorporation to Saint
Benilde International School. The Department of Education released the approved
papers tomoperate the said institution.

Saint Benilde International School (Calamba), Inc. opened its doors to the
community in June 2003 with 120 students composed of Nursery, Kinder,
Preparatory, and Grade 1 and 2. The school started with seven classrooms, a
computer room, and a library. Seven hardworking and dedicated teachers catered to
the needs of the students. To live up to its name as an International school and as per
DepEd requirement, SBIS offered Mandarin for preschool and Elementary levels and
Nihonggo for Secondary level as its elective subjects.

At present, SBIS is true to its words that it is a school where glocalized
lifelong learning given to the students by providing the clientele excellent quality and
affordable education

Promotional Policies
1. To be promoted to the next grade level, student must have passed a final
mark and conduct grade in all subjects.
2. A student is allowed to repeat his grade level for academic reasons only once
in the entire stay in SBIS provided his conduct in passing.
3. A student is allowed to repeat his grade level for academic reasons only once
in the entire stay in SBIS provided his conduct is passing.
4. A conduct of “D” will warrant his transfer to another school at the end of the
school year.

How are learners promoted or retained at the end of the school year?

This section provides the basis for promoting a learner to the next grade level
or for retaining a learner in the same grade level. These decision must be applied
based on evidence and judiciously.

A final grade of 75% or higher in all learning areas allows the student to be
promoted to the next grade level. Table 11 specifies the guidelines to be followed for
learner promotion and retention.

Table 11: Learner Promotion and Retention

Requirements Decision
For Grades 11 12 Learners 1. Final grade at least 75 in all
learning areas in a semester
Can proceed to the next semester
2. Did not meet expectations in a
prerequisite subject in a learning
areas.
Must pass remedial classes for
failed competencies in the
subject before being allowed to
enroll in the higher level subject.
3. Did not meet expectations in
any subject or learning areas at
the end of the semester.
Must pass remedial classes for
failed competencies in the
subjects or learning areas to be
allowed to enroll in the next
semester. Otherwise the learner
must retake the subject failed.
4. Must pass all subjects or
learning areas in Senior High
School.
Earn the Senior High School
certificate.
Ref. DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015
17

For Grade 11-12, learners who fail a unit/ set of competencies must be immediately
given remedial classes. They should pass the summative assessments during the
remediation to avoid a failing grade in a learning area/ subject. This will prevent
students from having back subjects in Senior High Schools (SHS). However, if the
learner still fails the remedial classes, he/she must retake the subject/s failed during
the summer or as a back subject. Guidance teachers/ career advocates must provide
support to the SHS student for his/her SHS tracks.

Summative assessments are also given during remedial classes. There are recorded,
computed, weighted, and transmitted in the same way as the quarterly grade. The
equivalent of the final grade for remedial classes is the remedial class mark (RCM).
The final grade at the end of the school year and the remedial class marks are
averaged. This results in the recomputed final grade. If the recomputed final grade is
75 or higher, the student is promoted to the next grade level. However, students will
be retained in the grade level if their recomputed final grade is below 75.

18
The teacher of the remedial class issues Certificate of Re-computed final grade which
is noted by the school principal. This is submitted to the division office and must be
attached to both Form 137 and School Forms Number 5. Figure 1 below shows a
sample certificate. The learner can enroll in the next grade level for Grade 1-10 and
in the next semester for Grades 11-12 upon presentation of the Certificate of Re-
Computed final grade. This certificate can be verified in the office as needed.

On School Discipline

Rationale

Discipline is a vital part of the entire learning experience. In view of this, the
school will make every effort to instruct and guide every student into achieving its
institutional objectives; part of which is to help the students make responsible choices
to understand that they have some control of the events that happened to them.

To enable the school to attain its goals, it will adopt and enforce certain
policies on the school discipline. It is the process of training and guiding the students
to form their character and develop their sense of responsibility and accountability as
citizens in the society. It is therefore imperative that all students must understand to
abide by the rules and regulations set by the school.

These routines are not made to militarize our procedures in school, but they
serve as the teachers’ and students’ guide as to what is expected daily. Adjustments
may be made depending on the call of the situation. These should be given and
explained to know what to do and what to avoid.

Disobedience =Disciplinary actions not as PUNISHMENT but as
CONSEQUENCE
