Student Nurses Association/Council Introduction The Student Nurses’ Association of India (SNAI) is an affiliated association of the student nurses under the umbrella of TNAI. The main purpose behind the establishment of SNAI was to uphold the dignity and to promote a team spirit among students with professional ethics. Every year, the TNAI invites nursing students to come and join the student nurses association of India.
OVERVIEW SNAI was established in 1929 during TNAI Annual Conference in General Hospital, Madras. Miss L.N.Jeans , Nursing Superintendent, Government General Hospital, Madras, was the first Honorary Organizing Secretary of SNAI. The first SNA annual Conference was held in Delhi during November 1932. The first one-day SNA Conference was held in 1951 , and the first Biennial SNA Conference was held at Nagpur in 1961. Miss I. Dorabji was appointed as first SNAI Secretary followed by Miss M.Philip .
OVERVIEW In 1970 with the reorganization of TNAI the designation of the SNAI Secretary was changed to SNAI Advisor. Mrs. Narender Nagpal was appointed as the first SNA Advisor followed by Ms. D. K. Singh (1978-79). The office was re-designated as Assistant Secretary-cum-SNA Advisor. In 2005, again re-designated as Deputy Secretary General-cum-SNA Advisor. Further the SNAI units are expanded gradually to many nursing institutions in India and started functioning. Now there are 900 SNAI units and 150000 SNAI members in the country.
Mission Promoting professional and social unity among the nursing students of our nursing college, providing a closer bond and more unified spirit among all nursing students through group activities and stimulating interest and understanding in the program of the professional nursing organizations.
The objectives of S.N.A is To help students to uphold the dignity and ideals of the profession for which they are qualifying. To promote a co-operative spirit among students for common good To furnish Nurses in training with advice in their courses of study leading up to professional qualification To encourage leadership ability and help students to gain a wide knowledge of the Nursing profession in its different branches and aspects.
The objectives of S.N.A is To increase the student's social contacts and general knowledge in order to help them take their place in the world when they have finished their training To encourage both professional and recreational meetings games and sports. To provide a special section in The Nursing Journal of India for the benefit of students. To encourage students to compete for prizes in the various competitions and also to attend national and regional conferences.
SNA MANAGEMENT Affairs of SNA are managed at the Unit, State and at National level. At the unit level, the unit executive committee manages SNA affairs. It comprises of President (Principal of the institution - TNAI member), SNA Advisor (any elected faculty - TNAI member), Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and the conveners of various committees are student nurses elected by the students during their SNA General Body meeting.
SNA MANAGEMENT At the State level, the State SNA Executive Committee comprises of the State TNAI President as ex-officio member, SNA Advisor, Student Vice President, student Secretary elected by all unit Vice president and Secretary of their state during state SNA conference/ Meeting At the National level, the SNA General Committee Comprises of TNAI President, Honorary Treasurer, Secretary-General, Dy. Secretary General-cum-SNA Advisor and State SNA Advisors and Student SNA Vice Presidents and Student Secretaries.
Activities Organization of meetings and conferences. At the TNAI Conference student representatives i.e Vice-President and the Secretary of the State Branch from each State are invited to attend the SNA General Committee meeting every year. Maintenance Of SNA Diary : It was instituted in 1939. This is a biennial record book drawn up for the use of the unit secretaries to record all unit activities – professional, educational, social-cultural and recreational activities. These dairies are assessed by the state SNA advisors and two best are sent to National SNA advisor for evaluation and award.

ACTIVITIES Exhibition of Posters : The exhibition is one of the oldest, useful and very popular activities of the Association. The students prepare posters on the subjects taught to them. The best one from the state under each section is entertained at the national level.
ACTIVITIES Public speaking and writing : To increase self-confidence in the students and help them gain skill in communication, the association arranges debates, panel discussions seminars. The students are encouraged to write on professional topics for The Nursing Journal of India. The competition on Scientific Paper Presentations related to the theme of the Conference is being organized. The Scientific Papers presented by many students are scrutinized at State level. Only one Scientific Paper on each Sub-theme of the conference was sent to the national level for final evaluation. The best three Scientific Papers, one on each of the sub-themes are selected at the national level.
ACTIVITIES Projects : The students undertake community projects – health surveys, school health projects, medical camps etc. Advocacy of nursing profession : To acquaint the general public with the Nursing profession, the general public is invited to the celebrations and festivals. Fundraising: Fundraising is an important and necessary activity. The fundraising is done at all levels.
ACTIVITIES Socio-cultural and recreational activities : like dance, dramatics, and music, sports competitions are carried out to bring about overall development in the students. In addition to foresaid activities, there are numerous other activities which are carried out by the units and students are awarded for their both scholastic and talent performances.
Benefits of SNA Membership Award of SNA Scholarship for ANM/GNM and B.Sc (N): The selected candidates are awarded Rs. 24000/- per year for the entire training period after receiving their progress report every year from respective principal/ institute.
Benefits of SNA Membership Participation in National conference : Concession in the registration fee, shall present scientific papers on the theme and participate in all competitions to exhibit their talents. Publication of articles : The student nurses are given an opportunity to publish articles/research papers in the Nursing Journal of India.
Benefits of SNA Membership Free copies of NJI & TNAI Bulletin : Institution and all Student Nurses Association (SNA) Units shall be entitled to free supply of Nursing Journal of India and TNAI Bulletin without any charges.
Benefits of SNA Membership Concession in availing Guest room facilities : Accommodation for SNA members are provided in the TNAI Headquarters and in TNAI’s Greater Noida campus at reasonable rate of Rs.250/- per student/day.
Benefits of SNA Membership Welfare Grant : SNA welfare Grant/ Medical Assistance/ Critical Assistance to needy Student Nurses. Disaster Relief Fund : Provided for affected students. Grievance redressal : resolving the complaints and grievances of the nursing students
