Jesus Christ The Excellent One Yes, God is very much interested in your academic work as a student. As our Lord Jesus Christ was EXCELLENT in all areas, we also as His followers are being called to EXCELLENCE in all aspects of our lives, and more importantly our academics as that is the most significant aspect of our lives currently. 2 Timothy 2:15 – Tells of studying to show yourself approved. Always remember that you must seek to portray God’s glory in all areas of your life. Proverbs 3:13 – Blessing in Wisdom
Academic Excellence Academics refers to anything relating to school work. Excellence refers to the ability to perform, achieve or excel. Academic excellence therefore is the demonstrated ability to perform, achieve or excel in scholastic or academic activities. It is mostly shown in the following ways – grades, honors, awards, competitive results and experiences that demonstrate your academic prowess (debates, quizzes), engagements in student life e.g volunteering for programs, contributions to the community, etc.
Reasons for Academic Excellence It portrays God; it brings forth God’s glory – Proverbs 1:7; 2 Timothy 2:15 It opens doors for you – Proverbs 22:29, Proverbs 19:8; scholarships, exchange programs, honors and benefits, etc. It builds you up and makes you unique – Proverbs 9:9
Achieve It! Accept responsibility; don’t complain Discipline in following timetables, studying at least 2 hours a day. Study to know and understand rather than to pass exams or merely to obtain a particular grade “Consistency keeps you going high; you can’t expect to do well and read your notes or textbooks only once; you can’t read any book once and expect to remember well enough” Manage your time well – effective use of timetables. Stay ahead – stay one or more chapters ahead when studying. Always be present and prompt
Achieve It! Cont’d Don’t quit whatever happens Diligently work until the end, do not give room to complacency Find out about academic support services and use them – Christian Fellowship executives, hall tutors, academic counselors at you various departments Stay focused; know your goals and stick to them. Do your best, the A’s are possible Read wide and engage in research Eat and rest well.
Limitations! Slothfulness- laziness to the highest degree, and doing last minute learning Improper and ineffective timetable Inadequate study time; cut off unnecessary things to create enough time Financial constraints – Recognize when you need financial aid and seek help Lack of study materials Doubt and discouragement Lack of TRUST IN GOD!!!
Thrive in Academic Excellence Academic Instructor/Mentor Proverbs 13:18; the place of instruction saves from trial and error. Helps gain better understanding in diverse areas. Availability Your life as a Christian must be susceptible to purposeful multitasking. Find yourself a “Jonathan”. Rejection of Mediocrity Never leave room for acceptance of mediocrity; persevere. Take heed of yourself Matthew 13:1,36; Know when to leave the “crowd” and withdraw to study. Also know how you learn and use that to study . Absolute trust in God Daniel 3:16-17; Trust in God, and don’t cheat in exams, maintain integrity.
Conclusion I leave you with this; Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the say of Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. AMEN.
