Knowledge in Islam Difference between ‘ ilm and knowledge Concept of Knowledge 01

al- I’lm Greater Meaning Terms of Muslim religious life such as, tawhid “recognition of the oneness of God,” ad-din , “the true religion,” and many others that are used constantly and emphatically. Stated in Quran In the Qur'an the word ' alim has occurred in 140 places, while al-' ilm in 27. Importance No other religion or ideology has so much emphasized the importance of ' ilm . I’lm vs Knowledge Knowledge means information about something, divine or corporeal, while ' ilm is an all-embracing term covering theory, action and education. Definition Knowledge in Arabic is ' ilm , which has a much wider meaning than its synonyms in English languages . 'Knowledge' falls short of expressing all the aspects of ' ilm . 01 03 04 05 02

From al-Quran From al-Hadith Importance of Knowledge 02

Importance Of Knowledge Wisdom Surah Al- Baqarah , ayah 269 reveals: "Allah grants wisdom to whom He pleases and to whom wisdom is granted indeed he receives an overflowing benefit." Difference Surah Al- Zumr , ayah 9 reveals: "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know?" To seek knowledge is a sacred duty, it is obligatory on every Muslim, male and female. The first word revealed of the Quran was " Iqra " READ! Seek knowledge! Educate yourselves! Be educated. The Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) has also emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge in different ways: (a) Time : "Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave." (b) Place : "Seek knowledge even if it is far as China." (c) Gender : "Seeking of knowledge is a duty of every Muslim" (d) Source : "Wisdom is the lost property of the believer, he should take it even if finds it in the mouth of a mushrik ."

The act of seeking knowledge through the proper means by itself is a virtue. It entails many rewards for the seeker. In other words, one does not have to be an accomplished scholar to attain its rewards but by the sincere effort to learn. In a hadith, the Prophet s.a.w . said: مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَطْلُبُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَلَكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا مِنْ طُرُقِ الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ لَتَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ Whoever takes a path in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to walk in one of the paths to Paradise. Indeed the angels will lower their wings in great pleasure with the one who seeks knowledge ( Sunan Abi Dawud ) Time Knowledge entails benefits and rewards The path to Paradise is eased https://muslim.sg/articles/seek-knowledge-islam-quotes-hadith-cradle-to-grave

Their ranks are raised in the sight of Allah On top of rewarding the virtuous act of seeking knowledge, Allah s.w.t. also acknowledges the bearers of knowledge. Those who have attained it are praised by Allah s.w.t. in the Quran with their ranks being raised. Allah will raise those who believe among you and those who were given knowledge, by many degrees. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do (Surah Al- Mujadila , 58:11 ) It is important to note that Allah s.w.t. is The One who raises and decreases the rank of a person. It is not allowed for us to look down on others and it is not up to us to think that our ranks have been raised above others just because we are on the path of learning. We are grateful for Allah’s blessings upon us. Truly Allah is All-knowing. Place https://muslim.sg/articles/seek-knowledge-islam-quotes-hadith-cradle-to-grave

Allah wishes good for a person with knowledge Although knowledge is attainable, we mustn’t delude ourselves into thinking that we are masters of our fate. Knowledge is a gift from Allah s.w.t. to those who are sincere in his pursuit and to whoever He wishes to give. In a hadith, Rasulullah s.a.w . mentioned to us how knowledge is given to a person whom Allah s.w.t. intends good: مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ If Allah intends goodness for a person, He gives him the understanding of the religion ( Sahih Bukhari) Gender https://muslim.sg/articles/seek-knowledge-islam-quotes-hadith-cradle-to-grave

Be equipped with relevant knowledge Rasulullah s.a.w . mentioned in a masyhur (well-known and widely corroborated) hadith compiled by Imam At- Tabarani , خير الناس أنفعهم للناس “ The best of people are those that benefit humanity.” (Al- Mu’jam Al-Awsat) We should not disregard the non-religious knowledge. They are fundamentally important for Muslims as well. We should not disconnect this form of knowledge from our Islamic teachings. Instead, we should find its link and establish the relationship with our faith as these perceived ‘worldly’ knowledge may intrinsically make us into better servants of Allah s.w.t. Obligatory Knowledge ( Fardh a’in ) Optional Knowledge ( Fardh kifayah ) Types of Knowledge 03

Types Religious sciences: These cover all branches of Islamic Shariah , such as: tafsir (Qur’anic exegeses), fiqh , hadith sciences (known as mustalah al-hadith or ‘ Ilm usul al-hadith), seerah (the Prophet’s biography), Islamic political science, (As- siyasah al- shar’iyah ), Islamic history, etc. Optional Knowledge If a group of individuals in the community undertake to acquire this kind of knowledge, all other individuals will be exempted from this duty, and the whole community will be free from responsibility or negligence to acquire this kind of knowledge. All obligatory knowledge deal exclusively with al-‘ Ilm al- Shari’i , that is, knowledge pertaining to Islamic faith, acts of worship, and the necessary transaction in the daily dealing of a Muslim. Obligatory Knowledge This refers to knowledge of the fundamentals of Islamic beliefs which every Muslim must know seeking this knowledge is an obligatory duty upon every Muslim. How to Achieve Goals?

Muhasabah Mutabaah Muraqabah Means self-evaluating oneself, nothing one's strengths and weaknesses, with intent of increasing the one's strengths and decreasing with one's weaknesses. Muraqabah is very unique and for the devout and staunch Muslim, this can be strong motivating factor. The essence of muraqabah is that the Creator is always "watching" and "grading" the human being. We have to note that we need to discipline our self, especially when we have goals which reflect our duties and responsibilities. We are doing well but we might have tendency to forget or stray. Therefore, we need to have a plan to keep our self on track. Mujahadah The definition from Al Ghazali , mujahadah means we must put an effort to enable to maintain and improve our behaviors. In other words, it means the human beings need to be trying and striving, even struggling, to get things that need to be completed. 01 02 03 04
