Studying Dental Assisting at Lake Area Technical Institute By Brooke Kuecker
Introduction South Dakota resident Brooke Kuecker graduated from Lake Area Technical Institute with an associate’s degree in dental assisting. Wishing to further her qualifications and skills after a year working as a dental assistant, Brooke Kuecker then returned to college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health science.
Lake Area Technical Institute Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, South Dakota, offers an 11-month-long, in-person diploma or a part-time e-degree that takes five to seven semesters. Students can become qualified and accredited dental assistants upon graduating and may then complete the Dental Assisting National Board for registration in South Dakota. Students may also choose to augment their skills with an associates of applied science.
Conclusion Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the Lake Area diploma combines practical experience in an up-to-date dental laboratory with theoretical components and a clinical experience off-campus, either in Watertown or further afield. The course covers typical procedures and duties performed daily by dental assistants, such as x-ray procedures, office management, cast fabrication, oxygen or nitrous oxide administration, and equipment sterilization.
