The clinic has been very successful in managing patients IBD symptoms in a timely manner while
preventing unnecessary emergency department visits, and alleviating anxiety and depression
associated with the unpredictable flares, ineffective pharmacological management and potential
development of negative self image. Kurina, Goldacre and Gill (2001) stated that over 60 percent of
the studied population with IBD had anxiety and/or depression. Poor symptom management,
ineffective coping mechanisms, lack of support, and negate self imaging, are the main risk factors

with the above statement and indicated that the interprofessional collaborative treatment approach at
the clinic offers short wait times, multidimensional support and long term follow up for the patients.
She also stated that her role includes all categories of core competencies of an NP (Canadian Nurses
Association [CNA], 2010; Wilson, 2016). The NP assesses patients at the clinic, based on the
laboratory work and biopsies taken during a colonoscopy, she confirms whether the patient has IBD
