Stylistic analysis of the old man and the sea A novel by Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, was an American novelist and short-story writer, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He was noted both for the intense masculinity of his writing and for his adventurous and widely publicized life. 5
The old man and the sea A short heroic novel published in 1952 and awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It was Hemingway’s last major work of fiction. The story centers on an aging fisherman who engages in an epic battle to catch a giant marlin. It tells of his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. 6
Summary An old Cuban fisherman named Santiago, who has not caught a fish for 84 days was being ridiculed by other fishermen for his bad luck. Manolin , his apprentice was forced to leave the old fisherman, though Manolin continues to support him with food and bait. Convinced that his luck must change, Santiago takes his skiff far out into the deep waters of the Gulf Stream, where he soon hooks a giant marlin. With all his great experience and strength, he struggles with the fish for three days, admiring its strength, dignity, and faithfulness to its identity. He finally reels the marlin in and lashes it to his boat. However, Santiago’s exhausting effort goes for naught. Sharks are drawn to the tethered marlin, and, although Santiago manages to kill a few, the sharks eat the fish, leaving behind only its skeleton. 7
Levels of Stylistic analysis
Phonological level Onomatopoeia “The old man loved to …hear them [Portuguese man-of-wars ] pop when he stepped on them.” The fish "left the water and the hissing that their stiff set wings made as they soared away.“ “I can remember the tail slapping and banging and the thwart breaking…” 9
Phonological level Tone The tone of Ernest Hemingway in "The Old Man and the Sea" is characterized by a blend of simplicity, dignity, and understated strength. Hemingway employs a spare and elemental style, reflecting the stripped-down existence of the protagonist, Santiago, an aging fisherman. This tone is achieved through Hemingway's use of short, simple sentences and a focus on the physicality of Santiago's struggle against the marlin, which conveys both the harshness and beauty of nature. 10
Graphological level The Old Man and the Sea is a prose. 11
