SUBSETS OF REAL NUMBERS GRADE 7

RATIONAL NUMBERS IRRATIONAL NUMBERS FRACTIONS INTEGERS NEGATIVE INTEGERS WHOLE NUMBERS ZERO NATURAL NUMBERS Real Numbers

IRRATIONAL NUMBERS are the numbers that cannot be written in the fraction form. These include non-repeating decimals. π = 3.1415926 e = 2.7182818284 3

RATIONAL NUMBERS are numbers that can be expressed as a quotient of two integers   4     0.50 =

INTEGERS are numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero. symbol: "ℤ" {1, 2, 3, 4, 5,...}

NEGATIVE INTEGERS are set of numbers that include all the integers less than zero. symbol: " "   - 2 - 18   - 89

WHOLE NUMBERS whole quantity without fractions or decimal points symbol: "W" {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...}

NATURAL NUMBERS are counting numbers. start in 1. This subset consists of all positive integers symbol: "N" {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...} What are the natural numbers from 1 to 100?

REAL NUMBERS Real numbers are the set of numbers that includes all rational and irrational numbers. Including zero, positive and negative numbers.

We can represent real numbers in a number line:

1. What subset of real numbers do children learn at an early stage when they were just starting to talk?

Answer: Natural numbers or counting numbers

2 . Anne wants to divide her pizza equally among her four friends. What subset of real number represents the amount of pizza each friend will receive?

Answer: Rational numbers

3. If you have 3 apples and you get 2 more apples, what subset of real numbers are represented by the total number of apples you have?

Answer: Whole numbers

4. Anthonete went to the market to buy vegetables. She bought 2 potatoes, 3 carrots, and 4 onions. How many vegetables did she buy in total?

Answer: 9 Answer: Integers

5. Jona is standing at the point zero on number line. She walks 4 steps to the left. What subset of real number represents Jona's position after taking these steps?

Answer: -4 Answer: Negative numbers

6. Melody wants to measure the diagonal of a square with sides of length of 1cm. What is the length of the diagonal and what subset of real numbers represents its length?

  Answer: Irrational numbers

Activity

Direction: Determine the subset of real numbers to which each number belongs. Use tick mark (/) to answer. Numbers Integer Rational Whole number Irrational example: 1.    2. 3. Numbers Integer Rational Whole number Irrational example:    2. 3.

ASSESSMENT TIME!

I. MATCHING TYPE 1. Integers A. counting numbers (no zero) 2. I rrational numbers B. any rational or irrational number 3. N atural numbers C. natural numbers with zero 4. R ational numbers D. whole numbers and their opposites 5. R eal numbers E. a number that does NOT repeat or termInate 6. W hole numbers F. any number with a decimal form that terminates or repeats

II. Give at least two examples of each kind of real numbers. 1. Irrational Numbers 2. Rational Numbers 3. Natural Numbers 4. Whole Numbers

III. Complete the Hierarchy Chart of subsets of real numbers.

ASSIGNMENT: Study and prepare for a short quiz.
