Industrial chemistry Presentation topic : sulphuric acid Presented by : G hulam ali

Sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) is a strong acid with hygroscopic and oxidizing properties. Sulfuric Acid is a mineral acid with the chemical formula H 2 SO 4 .  It is water-soluble and releases heat when dissolved in water. It is widely used in the manufacturing of fertilizers. It is also used in chemical synthesis and wastewater processes. What is Sulfuric Acid?

H 2 SO 4 Sulfuric Acid Molecular Weight/ Molar Mass 98.079 g/mol Density 1.84 g/cm³ Boiling Point 337 °C Melting Point 10 °C Properties of Sulfuric Acid – H 2 SO 4

Sulfuric Acid Structure – H 2 SO 4

There are three methods for the preparation of sulphuric acid Contact process Lead chamber process What is the process of manufacture of sulphuric acid?

The steps involved in the manufacture of sulphuric acid by contact process are as shown: (1) Sulphur (or iron pyrites) are burnt in air to form sulphur dioxide.   S+O2→ SO2 (2) Catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide.   2SO2+O2V2O5 2 =SO3 Δ rHo=−196.6kJ The reaction is reversible and exothermic. (3) Sulphur trioxide is dissolved in 98% sulphuric acid to form oleum (fuming sulphuric acid).  Contact Process for Manufacturing of Sulphuric Acid

SO3+H2SO4→H2S2O7 (4) Oleum is diluted with water to form sulphuric acid of desired concentration.     H2S2O7+H2O→2H2SO4             and Manufacture of H2SO4 by contact process involves three steps: 1. Burning of sulphur in air to generate SO2. 2. Conversion of SO2 to SO3 by oxidation with air in the presence of V2O5 as catalyst. 3. Absorption of SO3 in H2SO4 to obtain oleum  H2S2O7. A flow diagram for the manufacture of H2SO4 is given below:  2
