TO STUDY ABOUT SURFACE MINER IN AN OPENCAST COAL MINE
INTRODUCTION A Surface Miner is a basically a direct rock cutting machine. SMs have cutting drum usually fitted in the middle of machine and sometimes in front of the machine with ( t.c ) cutting peaks. They directly cut the rock by rotational motion of the cutting drum. The cut material (less than 300mm, mostly less than 100mm)centrally transferred to the primary conveyor underneath the machine from where the material is conveyed to the discharge conveyor which is slewing and vertical lifting type is directly loaded into either dump trucks or series of a belt conveyor for onward transportation to the secondary crusher.
Why Surface Miner is required? Surface Miner eliminates drilling and blasting . Eliminates primary crushing units . Can cut too thin layers 0.025m. It is used for selective mining. Less coal dilution.
Selection of Surface Miners The selection of SMs involves multiple things such as- Cuttability Index- The CI index should lie between 50-80. Productivity- It must be able to produce enough ore/coal to satisfy requirements. Cost- We want to keep operating cost as low as possible. Compatibility- The trucks and loaders must be able to work together not all trucks and loaders are compatible.
Types of Surface Miners Basically three types of Surface Miner are available in the market today - Machines with front boom cutting drum. Machines with middle drum configuration. Machines with front cutting wheel.
Units of Surface Miner Mainframe unit Convey unit Drive Unit Crawler Unit Cutting Unit
Main Frame It Consists of operators cabin, supporting frames, Boom counter weight, Slewing ring, etc. It consists of rigid metal-box welded design with integrated tanks for oil, diesel and water.
Crawler Unit
Conveying Unit it consist of two stage conveyors ,one carries the material from the cutting drum and discharges on the boom conveyor This conveyor in turn conveys it on to the trucks.
Working Cycle of Surface Miners Dumper Positioning. Cutting & loading onto the Conveyor. Conveyor loading the load onto dumper. Loaded dumper moves for unloading. Empty dumper replacing the loaded dumper.
Operating Modes The surface miner can be operated in different ways based on the onsite requirements- Empty Travel Back Method Turn Back Method Continuous Mining Method

Types of Loading There are three types of loading- Conveyor Loading Windrowing Side Casting

As per cuttability index we can rate the excavatibility of SMs as follows- Excavatibility Index Possibility of Ripping 50>CI Very easy excavation 50<CI<60 Easy Excavation 60<CI<70 Economic Excavation 70<CI<80 Difficult excavation not economic CI>80 Surface Miner should not be deployed
Factors affecting productivity of Surface Miners Point Load Index Volumetric Joint Count Abrasivity Cuttability Machine Configuration
Point load index- It is an index to determine strength of hard rock materials. It is influenced by sample size. Volumetric joint count- It is defined as the sum of the number of joints per meter for each set present, and is measured along the joint set perpendicular. Abrasivity- If the Abrasivity increases there will be decrease in performance of surface miner. Cuttability- Performance of surface miner depends on cuttability index, as the cuttability index increases performance of surface miner decreases. If the cuttability index exceeds greater than 80, surface miner should not be deployed. Machine Configuration- Performance of surface miner depends on machine configuration such as cutting tool configuration, drum weight, drum width, engine power, nature of coolant for tips.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness OEE is a simple tool to measure the performance against the capability of the equipment. OEE= Availability×Performance×Utilization rate. Where, Availability =(Total available time)-(Total downtime) Total available or planned time Total available time refers to the total available shift/planned time for production and downtime refers to any event that stop planned production.
OEE Performance Rate = Actual output from a machine Rated Output Performance rate is used for calculation of losses that arise due to operation of the mining machine at reduced performance levels. Utilization Rate= Use or worked time Total planned time
Conclusion Surface miners are increasingly finding there way into applications where drilling and blasting are prohibited or costly. They are found to be highly productive and economical in selective mining of coal, limestone and other minerals. Using surface miners allows operation to cut material along contact zones with an accuracy of just a few centimeters.
