Susceptibility -DR.H.A.ROBERTS DR. EKTA TIWARY BHMS ( NEHRU HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL) MD ( ORGANON OF MEDICINE & HOMOEOPATHIC PHILOSOPHY)
MEANING: SENSITIVENESS TO PERCEIVE SOMETHING 3 QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED HERE: WHAT IS SUSCEPTIBILITY? WHAT IS ITS RELATION WITH HEALTH, DISEASE AND CURE? WHAT IS ITS IMPROTANCE FOR A PHYSICIAN?
EXPRESSIONS OF SUSCEPTIBILITY IN VEGETABLE KINGDOM, ANIMAL KINGDOM VEGETABLE KINGDOM PLANTS ARE INFLUENCED BY CIRCUMSTANCES AND ENVIRONMENT. THEY REACT TO DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN DIFFERENT WAYS. YEARS AGO CONNECTICUT HORTICULTURISTS RAISED QUANTITIES OF PEACHES; SUDDENLY ALL PEACHES TRESS DIED. AND FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS NO PEACHES GROWN IN THE STATE. PEACHES THROVE ONL IN SOIL RICH IN POTASH. IF POTASH IS SUPPLIED, LUSCIOUS PEACHES WILL GROW ABUNDANTLY.
ANIMAL KINGDOM:- ANIMALS CAN WITHSTAND CERTAIN INFLUENCES AND HOLD THEIR OWN UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS, WHICH WOULD BE FATAL TO THE ANOTHER OF THE SAME SPECIES DEVELOPED UNDER DIFFERING CIRCUMSTANCES. IN OTHER WORDS SOME DEVELOP IMMUNITY UNDER CERTAIN CONDITION.
Examples The polar bear is immune to the rigors of the arctic, but is susceptible and soon succumbs to the influence of warm climates. The Bengal tiger thrive in the humidity of Indian jungle; other members of tiger family have adapted themselves To the atmosphere of Himalayas.

DEFINITION: SUSCEPTIBILITY PRIMARILY DEFINED AS THE REACTION OF THE ORGANISM TO EXTERNAL & INTERNAL INFLUENCES EVERYTHING THAT HAS LIFE IS MORE OR LESS INFLUENCED BY CIRCUMSTANCES AND ENVIRONMENT
HUMAN KINGDOMS:- ONE PERSON WILL THRIVE IN A VIGOROUS CLIMATE WHERE ANOTHER WILL BECOME SERIOUSLY ILL. ONE WILL THRIVE IN DAMPNESS AND OTHER WOULD SUCCUMB. ALTITUDE INFLUENCES SOME PEOPLE REACT FAVORABLY AND OTHERS ADVERSELY. THE SEASHORE IMPROVES ONE MAN’S CONDITION WHILE IT MAKES ANOTHER MAN ILL.
SUSCEPTIBILITY AND OUR FOOD The power of assimilation and nutrition is one of the phases of susceptibility. One easily assimilates a certain kind of food while another finds the same food indigestible. ONE MAN’S MEAT IS ANOTHER MANS POISON
SUSCEPTIBILITY AND DISEASE Human being are susceptible to infection and contagion in varying degrees. One man will become infected in contact with diseased individual while another will experience no ill effect whatever. One person is made ill by noxious plants while another man can handle them impunity. Certain people are capable of making wonderful proving of drug, while other will show no reaction whatever. ALL THESE REACTIONS HAVE TO DO WITH SUSCEPTIBILITY

SUSCEPTIBILITY AND VACUUM Susceptibility is very largely an vacuum in the individual. This is illustrated by the desires for food. The vacuum attracts and pulls for the things most needed, that are on same plane of vibration as the want in the body. Susceptibility varies in degree in different patients, and at different time in the same patient. Homoeopathic application of a remedy is an illustration of meeting the susceptibility and filling the vacuum that is present in sick individual. In proving the remedy produces an artificial susceptibility similar to the susceptibility to sick individual. The application of homoeopathic remedy in sickness satisfies this natural susceptibility.
SUSCEPTIBILITY IN HEALTH, DISEASE AND CURE Susceptibility is expressed in physical, psychological and sexual levels. In areas of a)affinity b)attraction c) desires d) needs e) hunger. These are expressed normally and are satisfied by the individual. But when they become morbid and perverted then disease, suffering and death occurs. They can also be altered by suitable modifying agents viz. drugs. These expressions of susceptibility can be taken as generals of the patient during case taking and thus the natural susceptibility of the patient could be found out.
EVEN THOUGH THE TERM SUSCEPTIBILITY IS NOT DIRECTLY REFERRED IN ORGANON OF MEDICINE, KENT QUOTES APHORISM 30, 31,32,33 AS BEARING A LIKELY EXPLANATION FOR THE CONCEPT OF SUSCEPTIBILITY WITH REGARDS TO ARTIFICIAL MORBIFIC AGENTS.
ROLE OF PHYSICIAN The role of physician is to conserve natural susceptibility. Physician must lay particular stress on demanding the conservation of normal susceptibility in care of the sick, for in sickness susceptibility is exaggerated reaction that we find our clue to similar remedy.. All our efforts must be gauged by this one question: Does the remedy satisfy the demands of this exaggerated susceptibility?
The indications for the remedy shows the susceptibility in marked degree and the patient will respond, because similar potentized remedy is always stronger than the susceptibility so that it fully satisfies the morbid condition.
STATES OF SUSCEPTIBILITY A patient may be susceptible to number of remedies, but the greatest susceptibility is manifest in the most similar; in other words similimum. Susceptibility can be Normal susceptibility Increased susceptibility Decreased susceptibility Destroyed susceptibility
It should be our aim never to use any agent or anything of any nature, or to adopt any procedure, that would in the latest diminish or destroy this power of susceptibility and the reaction of the organism in its normal manner. Upon this normal susceptibility and reaction depends the status of health.
Many medicines or preparations are introduced into the organism either by mouth or by injection into the blood stream, that have no basis of similarity to the susceptibility of the patient, and which are therefore Destructive to restoration of normal susceptibility When such procedures are adopted on any other basis than symptom similarity, the results PALLIATION OR SUPPRESSION The ultimate result is that the patient is worse than before, or complete destruction takes place.
The Boston surgical journal shows Antiseptics destroys normal susceptibility The body produces its own antiseptics, which are a part of the chemical barriers of the immune system. The skin and respiratory tract secrete antimicrobial peptides such as the B-defensins. Enzymes such as lysozyme and phospholipase A2 in saliva are also antiseptic.
The human economy has inherited many tendencies from the accumulations of its ancestral heritage. These tendencies show themselves in child life in the great number of so-called children diseases. Which are nothing more or less than an inward turmoil of bringing to the surface and expelling certain conditions; again, these eruptions are a lack of ability on the part of The patient to create a similar state within his own economy to satisfy the susceptibility. In other words, by the lack of the applied similar remedy, the susceptibility is not met Therefore Nature steps in with the laws of susceptibility and an influence is attracted which blooms forth as an infectious or contagious disease, so as to most fully satisfy this susceptibility.
When the susceptibility of this particular state has once been satisfied by an expression of the similar condition, a partial cure has taken place and they can no more develop the reaction to a similar infection. Thus we see that susceptibility and reaction are basic principles, and are very closely allied to the problems of immunization. A proper concept of these principles is something that the homoeopathic physician must seriously consider; The interplay of these principles must become as second nature to him, if he wishes to use well the forces of nature in healing the sick.
“ THE SIMILAR REMEDY, OR SIMILAR DISEASE, SATISFIES SUSCEPTIBILITY AND ESTABLISHES IMMUNITY.”
