SWOT analysis is a planning tool used to understand the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats faced by an Individual   SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. AIM The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external factors that are important to achieving success. SWOT analysis, groups key pieces of information into two main categories:   1‐Internal factors – The strengths and weaknesses internal to the individual 2‐External factors – The opportunities and threats presented by the external environment.

  • To do a SWOT analysis which is effective and meaningful, one has to be patient, open minded and analytical of oneself without any bias • You are most likely to succeed in life when you use your talents (Strengths) to their fullest extent.   • It is also true that you'll suffer fewer problems if you know what your weaknesses are.   • If you manage these weaknesses in such a way that they don't obstruct what you do., you are bound to be successful   • So how do you go about identifying these strengths and weaknesses, and analyzing the opportunities and threats that flow from them?

SWOT analysis is a highly useful technique that helps you do this.   • With a little thought and application, it can help you uncover opportunities that you would not have spotted  otherwise and by understanding your weaknesses, you can manage and eliminate threats that might block your ability to move forward   • You can separate yourself from others and move ahead your peers, and also develop the specialized talents and abilities needed by you to advance in your  Professional, Personal and Social life

STRENGTHS • What advantages do you have that others don't have (for example, Skills, Knowledge, Certifications, Education, Networking etc)?    • What all you can or do you do ‐better than others?   • What all do others see and accept as your strengths?   • What are your achievements that you are proud of?   • What all qualities do you possess that others fail to exhibit? Etc…etc

WEAKNESS • Which are the  tasks you usually avoid because you don't feel confident  or  comfortable doing them?   • What are your weakness  or development areas that are mentioned or pointed out by people around you?   • How confident are you about your education, skills and competency? If not,  which are the areas you want to develop?   • What are your negative habits (Like‐, are you often late? ill organized? Short  tempered?   Whining, Foul mouthed at times, how good are you at handling stress?   • What are the personality traits that hold you back in your field? For instance, if you have to periodically conduct meetings = a fear of public speaking   would be a major weakness. ..Etc…etc

OPPORTUNITIES • Do you have a network of strategic contacts to help you, or offer right advice?   • Are others failing to do something important? If so, can you take advantage of their lapses?   Etc,etc

Threats What all hindrances do you currently face in overcoming your weakness?   • Consider all those who are competing with you.    • Is your world (or the demand for the things you do) changing/evolving –if so are you getting geared up  ready for same?    • Does changing technology, Changing demand for Skill set needed  or social changes and changing perception (general or specific) threaten your position?  • Is any of your weakness leading you to unexpected (or excepted) threats?

Why SWOT.. • Performing this analysis will often provide important information – it can point out what needs to be done and put problems into clearer and right perspective.   • SWOT matrix is the framework for analyzing your strengths and weaknesses as well as the opportunities and threats that you face. This helps you to focus on your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, and take the greatest possible advantage of opportunities available to you.
