SYLLABIFICATION

What is meant by syllabification? The process of dividing words into smaller parts or syllables is called syllabification. Note: Every syllable should have a vowel sound.

It has six types. They are Monosyllabic words Disyllabic or Bisyllabic words Trisyllabic words Tetrasyllabic words Pentasyllabic words Polysyllabic words

Monosyllabic words Words having only one syllable are called Monosyllabic words.

Examples: Act, cat, head, Book, one, bat, Life, plot, make, first

Disyllabic words Words having only two syllables are called Disyllabic words.

Examples: Educate= edu - cate Beside= be- side Delay= de- lay Address= ad- dress Control= con- trol Suspect= sus- pect teacher= teach- er

Trisyllabic words Words having only three syllables are called Trisyllabic words.

Examples: Tomorrow= to- mor- row Popular= po- pu - lar Consider= con- si - der Intention= in- ten- tion Tradition= tra - di- tion Charity= char- i - ty

Tetrasyllabic words Words having four syllables are called Tetrasyllabic words.

Examples: Locality= lo- ca- li- ty Security= se- cu- ri - ty Atrocity= at- ro - ci- ty Participant= par- ti - ci- pant Morality= mo - ra- li- ty

Pentaasyllabic words Words having five syllables are called Pentasyllabic words.

Examples: Classification= clas- si- fi- ca- tion Communication= com- mu- ni- ca- tion Appreciation= ap- pre- ci- a- tion

Polysyllabic words Words having many syllables are called Polysyllabic words.

Examples: Syllabification= syl - la- bi- fi-ca- tion Personification= per- so- ni - fi- ca- tion Simultaneously= si - mul - ta- ne- ous - ly
