WHAT IS SYNCHROMESH GEARBOX ? This is a type of Constant Mesh Gearbox , where Synchronizers are used instead of Dog Clutch . In mordern cars the synchromesh gearbox is numeriously used . It is modified version of constant mesh gearbox with synchronizing units--- which equalize the speed of gear and dog before meshing and provide a smooth meshing . avoid the necessity of double clutching . INTRODUCTION
It consists of Clutch shaft, Layshaft, main shaft, and Synchromesh device. The gears on layshaft are rigidly fixed while gears on the main shaft are free to rotate on the main shaft with respect to the speed of layshaft.
CHARACTERISTICS Gears can freely rotate or locked to the shaft on which they are carried . The locking mechanism consists of a sliding collar which bridges between two circular rings with teeth on them . i) one travel with the gear . ii) one travels with the shaft . The device work like a friction clutch . Equal speed ensure smooth meshing . Normally not used in 1st and reverse gear .
ADVANTAGES The synchromesh type of transmission has the big advantage of smooth and quick shifting of gears without danger of damaging the gears and without necessity for double clutching . It consider as the most advanced transmission and has been adopted in most cars . Eliminate clashing of gears and make shifting easier . Engagement is done without noise and damaged the dogs.
DISADVANTAGES It is expensive due to high manufacturing cost and more number of parts . It is not capable enough to handle high loads . Upon improper handling , it is easily prone to damage . It could be affected by quick clutch disengagement on shifting .
