TABLE SETTING
•The table is on display from the moment
the guests arrive.
•It clearly conveys the thought that has
gone into planning the occasion.
•It shows the invited guests that they are
well cared for.
Tables are set based on:
•The occasion (formal, informal)
•The meal period (b/fast, lunch, dinner)
•The menu

ITEMS USED IN TABLE
SETTING
•Linen
–Tablecloth
–Napkin
–Placemat
•Service Plate

ITEMS USED IN TABLE SETTING
•Forks – salad, fish, entree, dessert
•Knives – salad ,fish, entrée
•Spoons – soup, dessert, tea
•Arrange all of the flatware in order it will
be used, working from the outside
toward the plate for each of the courses
served.

•Bread and
butter plate
•Water glass•Wine glass-red/white

SETTING THE TABLE
•Allow at least 28 inches width
for each place setting (Cover)
A COVER IS A PLACE SETTING AT
THE TABLE
•Keep your tableware
approximately one inch from the
edge of the table.
•All knives should be placed with
the cutting edge toward the
plate .

SETTING THE TABLE
•Place glasses: from right to
left, white wine, red wine, and
•Champagne may be placed
behind red and white .

SETTING THE TABLE
•Utensils should be about ½ inch
away from the plate or each other.
They should also be lined up
evenly from their bottoms.
•Dinner plates should be placed
approximately 2 inches from the
table's edge.
•Napkins are commonly placed on
the plate, to the left of the forks or
inside of a drinking glass.

ETIQUETTE
•Etiquette means behaving
yourself a little better than is
absolutely essential.
•Dining etiquette is good table
manners, knowing how to behave
while dining or entertaining
•Manners are universal and are the
epitome of human interaction.

ETIQUETTE BASICS
•Ladies always sit with knees
together or legs crossed at the
ankle
•Don’t place handbags on
desk/table
•Don’t bite/cut nails in public

AT THE TABLE
Be sure to:
•Sit up straight to make a good
impression.
•Keep your hands on your lap when not
eating
•Rest hands on the table (with wrists on
the edge of the table)

AT THE TABLE
•Eat rolls or bread by tearing off small
bite size pieces and butter only the
piece you are preparing to eat
When ready for another piece repeat
the process.

AT THE TABLE
•If you need something that you
cannot reach easily politely ask
someone closest to the item you
need to pass it to you.

AT THE TABLE
•Engage in table conversation that is
pleasant but entirely free of
controversial subjects.
•You should not leave the table during
the meal except it is an emergency.

AT THE TABLE
Do NOT:
•Smoke
•Spit a piece of food or wipe our noise in the
napkin
•Add salt/pepper to food before you have
tasted it.
•If food get caught between your teeth and
you can’t remove it with your tongue, leave
the table and go to a mirror where you can
remove the food from your teeth in private.

AT THE TABLE
•Never slurp soup from the spoon.
•Never chew with your mouth open or
make loud noises when you eat

Never use a toothpick at the table
Never blow your nose with your napkin
Never talk with a mouthful of food
Never tell dirty jokes
