Understanding Longitudinal Research in ELT By: Waode Siti Khadija Hardianti Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University 2025/2026

Definition of Longitudinal Research in ELT Observes or measures the same subjects repeatedly over time. Aims to understand changes, developments, or trends. Provides insights into students’ language skill progress. Combines aspects like fluency, writing, and cultural influence.

Procedures for Implementing Longitudinal Research 1. Planning – Define objectives, subjects, observation period, and instruments. 2. Data Collection – Repeated observations, tests, and interviews at multiple time points. 3. Data Analysis – Examine trends, changes, or stability in variables. 4. Control & Ethics – Manage external variables, ensure participant consent and confidentiality.

Example of Longitudinal Research in ELT Study: 'Tertiary Students’ Metacognitive Strategies in EFL Writing' (Wijaya et al., 2025). Participants: 74 English Education students over 2–3 semesters. Instruments: Questionnaire, writing assignments, and classroom observation. Result: Gradual improvement in metacognitive strategies, especially in evaluation.

Appendix – Data Illustration Example instruments: Observation sheets and writing rubrics. Data tracking student development over multiple semesters. Visualization of progress through charts and tables. Demonstrates continuous assessment and learning dynamics.

Conclusion Longitudinal research provides in-depth understanding of learning development. Allows analysis of trends, process changes, and influencing factors. Supports continuous improvement in English Language Teaching practices.
