Teaching aids are materials that the classroom teacher uses to help students understand the concepts s/he introduces during his/her lesson. An object (such as a book, picture, or map) or device (such as a DVD or computer) used by a teacher to enhance or enliven classroom instruction. E.C.Daint : Audio-visual aids means that complete material, which helps to understand the written or oral subject matter in classroom or in other teaching situations. Jhut : Audio-visual aids are devises that help the teachers to accomplish things quickly & effectively

Visual Aids: The aids which use sense of vision are called Visual aids. For example :- actual objects, models, pictures, charts, maps, chalkboard, overhead projector, slides etc. Out of these black board and chalk are the commonest ones . Audio Aids: The aids that involve the sense of hearing are called Audio aids. For example: - radio, tape recorder, gramophone etc. Audio - Visual Aids: The aids which involve the sense of vision as well as hearing are called Audio- Visual aids. For example: - television, projector, etc.
Need of Teaching Aids: The teaching aids create the environment of interest for the students. Teaching aids provide direct experience to the students Students can learn better when they are motivated properly through different teaching aids. Teaching aids develop the proper image when the students see, hear taste and smell properly. Teaching aids provide complete example for conceptual thinking. Teaching aids saves time and energy. Teaching aids make the classroom live and active.
Importance of Teaching Aids : Teaching aids play a very important role in Teaching- Learning process. Importance of Teaching aids is as follows:- Motivation Teaching aids motivate the students so that they can learn better. Clarification Through teaching aids, the teacher clarifies the subject matter more easily. Avoids Dullness Decreases lazy attitudes of students. Direct Experience Teaching aids provide direct experience to the students
Characteristics of Good Teaching Aids A few characteristics of good teaching aids are as follows :- Teaching aids are meaningful and they always stand to serve a useful purpose. Teaching aids are simple , cheap and may be improvised. Teaching aids are accurate and realistic. Teaching aids are according to the mental level of the learners. Their purpose may be informative but it is not just entertainment. Teaching aids helps in realization of stipulated learning objects.
Conclusion: Audio Visual Aids are materials using sight or sound to present informing. To use Audio/Visual Aids in teaching you have to bridge the gap between the different types of learners by adding audio/visual aides to your teaching techniques. Implement 'show and tell l' sessions to promote student involvement. Provide audio/visual aides to demonstrate mathematical concepts to students because this will help students learn to think of complicated material in a practical way.
