TEACHING AS YOUR VOCATION, MISSION AND PROFESSION

TEACHING AS YOUR VOCATION

“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feeling”.” - Carl Jung

Teaching as your vocation “ A man knows when he has found his vocation when he stops thinking about how to live and begins to live.” – Thomas Martin VOCATION – comes from the Latin word “ vocare ” which means “to call”. Teaching is more than a noble profession. It is a vocation – a calling.

“If there’s a call there must be a caller and someone who is called. There must also be a response.” CHRISTIANS caller is GOD MUSLIMS caller is ALLAH Believers in the SUPREME BEING will look at his voiceless call to have a vertical dimension. Non-believers. The call is experienced but viewed solely along a horizontal dimension. It is like man calling another man, never a Superior being calling man.

Vocation is a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation. Teaching requires dedication and service in order for an individual to be considered as a real teacher. Joy is addressed as a teacher for teaching and serving the children of a far rural community. She travels almost 20 kilometers learning and development. When someone is practices teaching as his vocation , they teach with dedication . In summary, vocation is only for some who are really dedicated not just to work but also to serve other people .

TEACHING AS YOUR MISSION

Teaching as your mission The etymology of the word mission Teaching is also a mission. The word mission comes from the Latin word “ misio ” which means to send. You are called to be a teacher and you are sent into the world to accomplish a mission, to teach.

If you’re given a chance to be a chosen teacher someday, what mission will you do?

Teaching as your mission Teaching as your mission means it is the task entrusted to you in this world. If it is your assigned task then naturally you’ve got to prepare yourself for it.

TEACHING AS YOUR PROFESSION

Teaching as your profession “The term professional is one of the arduous years of preparation, a striving for excellence, a dedication to the public interest, and commitment to moral and ethical values.” Because the end goal of a profession is a service and as we have heard many times “we cannot give what we do not have”. We can give more if we have more.

THE ELEMENTS OF A PROFESSION

The elements of a Profession Teaching, engineering, nursing and accounting are professional. We the educators are the creator of all professional. Through teaching, we are able to create the young minds into professional ones also. The doctors, nurses, engineers, businessman will not exist without the teachers who teach them to become professionals.

What are the distinguishing marks of a professional teacher ? According to former chair person of the professional regulation commission, Hon, Hermogenes P. Pobre , in his pithy address in a national convention of educators remarked.

“The term professional is one of the most arduous years of preparation, a striving for excellence, a dedication to the public interest, and commitment to moral and ethical values”.

THE “PWEDE NA” MENTALITY VS. EXELLENCE

“The striving for excellence” as another element of a professional brings us to our “ pwede na ” mentality, which is inimical for excellence. It is expressed in other ways like “ talagang ganyan ‘ iyan ” “ wala na tayong magagawa ,” etc. All of these are indicators of defeatism and mediocrity. If we remain true to our calling and mission as a professional teacher, we have no choice but to take the endless and the “less traveled road” to excellence.

“Don’t settle for less! Strive for excellence!”

TEACHING AND A LIFE MEANING

Want to give your life meaning? Want to live a purpose-driven life? Spend it passionately in teaching, the most noble profession. Consider what Dr. Josette T. Biyo , the first Asian teacher to win the Intel Excellence in Teaching Award in an international competition, said in a speech delivered before a selected group of teachers, superitendents , DepEd officials and consultants, to win: Teaching may not be a lucrative position. It cannot guarantee financial security. It even means investing your personal time, energy and resources. Sometimes it means disappointments, heartaches, and pains. But touching the hearts of people and opening the minds of children can give you joy and contentment which money could not buy. These are the moments I teach for. These are the moments I live for.
