TEACHING AS SKILL-Use of TLM
EVOLUTION OF THE CONCEPT TLM Teaching Aid Teaching Learning Material Teaching Learning Resources
CONCEPT OF TLM Its supplementary device by which the instructor tries to clarify doubts, teach new concepts, establish new ideas, make interpretations, ensure correct appreciation of facts and phenomena.
DEFINITIONS “Instructional aids are those sensory objects which initiate, stimulate and reinforce learning” -Burton “Instructional aids refer to those devices by the use of which communication of ideas between persons & groups in various teaching-learning situations is helped. these are also termed as multi-sensory materials.” -Edgar Dale “Instructional aids are any device which can be used to make the learning experience more concrete, more realistic & more dynamic” -Kinder S: James “Instructional aids refers to all materials used in the classroom or in the teaching situations to facilitate the understanding of the written or spoken word” -Dent

TYPES OF TLM Auditory aids Visual aids Audio-visual aids Aids through the activity/activity centered aids
Audio Visual Gramophone Tape recorder Radio Film Film strips Slide Print matter (book, news paper, magazines) Graphic aids (photo- graph, poster, charts, maps, etc) Objects (specimens, models, seeds, etc) Display boards (white/black board, bulletin board, etc)
Audio-visual Activity centered Feature film Television VCR/CD E-Learning Educational tour and trip Dramatic Art/sports/ICT integration
Improvised TLM Not costly Enhance the teaching skill Self satisfaction Effective for the meaning of lesson NPE 1986,1992 Collect from environment without any cost Easily available
USES OF TLM Provides Direct experience Helps in development organization and summarizing phases of the lesson One picture is equal to one thousand words. Help to reduce excessive verbalism and save time for the teacher and the students To stimulate interest toward the learning task, imaginations of events, the power of observation and motivation for further knowledge Better acquisition & longer retention of ideas Break of monotony and makes joyful Clarify doubts and can reach a large number of students within a short time Ensure a healthy classroom interaction To add beauty and colour to the classroom instruction
Guidelines for using TLM effectively TLM should be meaningful and purposeful, useful & relevant, beautiful & attractive, cheap, up-to-date, simple, not be too big & too small & old /damaged, colour contrast, visible. Teacher should be clear in his mind about the exact point in the lesson which requires use of aids The students should be mentally prepared to be exposed to the aid before it is actually used.
Proper presentation Arranged & placed on the table Used only one at a time Large number of aids should not be used in a single lesson Explain and clarify which needs such explanation and clarification Display properly Avoid unnecessary noise Encourage students to participate in the discussion to see, hear, smell, handle and manipulate the aids Kept carefully in a separate place for use on future occasion
Some tips for use of TLM Enter into the classroom with smiling face (not laughing ) Bring the content mastery Remove your nervousness Don’t be so serious & so light. Maintain balance Show democratic leadership in the classroom Don’t show your anger in the classroom Don’t ask sensitive question in the classroom Keep more & more patience in the classroom Everything listen patiently & be careful for providing negative thing Keep good rapport with the HM/principal, other teaching staffs, non teaching staffs & try to create healthy atmosphere in that situation.
Use of ICT for TLM
Concept of ICT ICT is the convergence of audio-visual and telephone networks with computer networks through a various linking systems It covers any product/device that can store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in as digital form. UNESCO defines ICT as a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to create, store, transmit, share information, 10/6/2023 Prof. Ramakanta Mohalik, RIE (NCERT), Bhubaneswar, India 22
