Teaching method
Language teaching methods focus on different ways to learn a
language.
Some methods emphasize grammar rules, while others emphasize
practical use.
Gouin’s Series Method and The Direct Method both focus on
learning without translation.
First, we will discuss Gouin’s Series Method.
Gouin’s Series Method Overview
Developed by François Gouin, this method is based on
sequential actions and visualization. Gouin believed
that language should be learned in the same way that
children naturally acquire their first language through
experiences and actions.

Through Sequence and Repetition
How Gouin’s Series Method Works
Example:
1. I take the book
2. I open the book
3. I look at the first page
4. I start reading
5. I turn the page
6. I continue reading
7. I close the book
8. I put the book back
The Direct Method overview
What is the Direct Method?
A language teaching approach that emphasizes immersion.
No translation – students learn directly in the target
language.
Focuses on speaking and listening, rather than grammar
and rules.
Developed in response to the Grammar-Translation Method.
Developed and refined in the late 19th century by Maximilian Berlitz
and other linguist as a reaction to grammar-translation methods.
How The Direct Method Works
The Direct Method, also known as the Natural Method, is a language teaching
approach that emphasizes direct communication and immersion in the target
language. It prioritizes speaking and listening skills, encouraging learners to
think and communicate directly in the new language without relying on
translation. Vocabulary and grammar are taught through context, and teachers
use visual aids and interactive activities to make learning engaging and
practical. While it effectively develops fluency and real-life communication
skills, it may require additional support for grammar and reading/writing.
