National Nacho Day The Inventor: Nachos were created in 1943 by a restaurant maître d' named Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya in Piedras Negras, Mexico. The Accident: Anaya improvised the dish for a group of hungry U.S. military wives who arrived after the cook had left for the night. The Original Recipe: The first nachos were extremely simple: fried tortilla chips, shredded cheese, and sliced jalapeños. Modern toppings like meat and sour cream were added later. The Name: The original name was "Nacho's Especiales " (Nacho's Special), later shortened to "Nachos." American Fame and Trivia Ballpark Debut: Nachos gained massive U.S. popularity in the 1970s when the non-refrigerated liquid "ballpark" cheese was introduced at Texas Rangers baseball games.
