nowledge is what is known; the confident understanding of a
K
subject, potentially with the ability to use it for a specific
purpose. The phrase ‘Knowledge is Power’ might have originated
in the 16th century with Francis Bacon or Thomas Hobbes but as a
political strategy, it’s as old as time. Religious societies established the
boundaries around literacy, leveraging their inaccessibility for the
governance of society. When the King James Bible was being translated,
the great debate centered on whether people deserved, or rather could be
trusted with, the power to read the Bible without the priestly class as
intermediaries. In India, Sunil Khilnani in his book The Idea of India talks
about the ancient Brahmin developing a monopoly on literacy and thereby
creating a power that was insulated from the political upheavals of the
time. Formal education as we know it grew out of traditional systems of
religious instruction. In Europe, the current university system evolved out
of the monastic system of learning – universities were cathedrals of
education in more ways than one.
And then, as with every aspect of public life, the state usurped the role of
religion. Education began to be seen as a public good – a vital
responsibility of the state towards its citizenry. And then as free market
capitalism becomes the dominant ideology, private education began to be
seen as the solution to a supply-demand problem that was not going away.
Ken Robinson in his TED talk mentions that ‘in the next 30 years,
according to UNESCO, more people worldwide will be graduating
through education than since the beginning of history’.
But, as mentioned before, our education system is based on the idea of
th
academic ability. And there’s a reason. Well, before the 19 century, there
weren’t any public systems of education. They all came into being to meet
the needs of industrialism. So the hierarchy is particularly rooted on the
idea that emphasizes on subjects which relate to work. So students are
probably steered benignly away from their interests on the grounds that
they would never get a job doing hobbies.
An important note is that intelligence is diverse. We think about the world
in all the ways that we experience it. We think visually, we think in sound,
we think kinesthetically. We think in abstract terms, we think in
movement. And also, intelligence is dynamic. If you look at the
interactions of a human brain, intelligence is wonderfully interactive.
So, have a fair perspective towards Education, thinking of it as a key to
unlock doors and achieve aspirations, instead of a way to mould minds for
errant materialization of natural resources; for a particular commodity.

ndia holds an important place in the global education industry. According to statistics by IBEF, the
I
country has more than 1.5 million schools with over 260 million students enrolled in about 762
universities and 35,539 colleges. With such huge number of educational institutions, India has the
world’s largest higher education system in the world and it ranks 2nd in terms of student enrolment in higher
education. However, there is still a lot of potential for further development in the education system.
The education sector in India is poised to witness major growth in the years to come as India will have
world’s largest tertiary-age population and second largest graduate talent pipeline globally by the end of
2020. In the following decade, by 2030, it is estimated that India’s higher education will adopt transformative
and innovative approaches in Higher education. The country envisions having an augmented Gross
Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 50 per cent and emerging as the single largest provider of global talent, with one
in four graduates in the world being a product of the Indian higher education system.
Various government initiatives are being adopted to augment the growth of distance education market, while
focusing on new education techniques as well, such as E-learning and M-learning. Education sector has seen
a swarm of reforms and improved financial disbursements in recent years that could possibly transform the
country into a knowledge haven. With human resource increasingly gaining significance in the overall
development of the country, development of education infrastructure is expected to remain the key focus in
the current decade.

VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY:
The Centre of Technical Excellence
he mission of VNIT is to achieve high standards of excellence in
T
generating and propagating knowledge in engineering and allied
disciplines. V.N.I.T. is committed to provide an education that
combines rigorous academics with the joy of discovery. The Institute
encourages its community to engage in a dialogue with society to be able
to effectively contribute for the betterment of humankind.
Empowering the Technical Aspect of Education
“Scientists investigate that which already is; Engineers create that which
has never been” – Albert Einstein. It is “Science” to describe
electromagnetic radiation, but it is “Engineering” to build a radio or TV.
As important as the study of engineering is, it is also challenging and
exciting. Engineers use models provided by science combined with
innovative thinking to solve problems and create new designs that
benefit humanity. Many of the so-called “wonders of modern Science”
are really wonders of modern Engineering. A career in engineering is a
very worthwhile profession as it involves a lifetime of continuous
learning to adapt to changes in society and the natural world. It often
involves working in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, multi-site teams.
In India, the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are autonomous
public institutes of higher education offering degree courses at
bachelor's, master’s, and doctorate levels in various branches of
engineering, architecture, management and science. They are governed
by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which declared them
as institutions of national importance alongside Indian Institutes of
Technology.
One among the 30 such institutions of national importance receiving
special recognition from the Government of India is Visvesvaraya
National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. In order to provide a
well-versed platform for best technical education, VNIT was established
in June 1960 by the Government of India and later named in honor of
engineer, planner and statesman, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
VNIT is a public engineering and research institution, which awards
bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in engineering, technology and
architecture. It has various academic departments, with over 30

There is indeed a grave need for the education system to undergo a transition from a heavy emphasis on
teaching to a heavy emphasis on learning. Envisioning the advancements, experts ought to create the
courseware for the students to learn anytime or anywhere at a pace that is comfortable for them, and
learn about topics that majorly interests them. For promoting quality education, VNIT has ensured that
highly qualified faculties are appointed and good lab facilities are established in the areas of cutting
edge technologies.
The student-centric system ensures academic freedom to the student to select elective courses, projects,
open courses and seminars. The Institute offers undergraduate courses in Computer Science,
Electronics, Mechanical, Architecture and six other engineering disciplines. Institute also offers PG
programmes in 19 engineering discipline as well as 4 science faculties. The Engineering undergraduate
programs are usually of four-year duration, while Architecture has a five-year program. The Institute is
also an excellent Hub for research where around 500 full time PhD students are pursuing Doctoral
research in various disciplines. Most of the courses have been accredited by the National Bureau of
Accreditation.
The teachers’ and students’ academic satisfaction are evaluated and ensured through feedbacks taken at
the end of each semester. The transparency in evaluation is ensured through inspection of answer books
of each examination by students and with a discussion thereon. Innovation based courses are also
available to students that have formats where innovation and design aspects of students are nurtured.
The students are thus encouraged into the learning process rather than typical teaching approach.
Career Opportunities & Exciting Exposures for VNITians
With roles available in almost every industry, engineers have a huge range of career opportunities open
to them. VNIT engineers have access to a versatile career that spans many industries and thanks to the
varied skills they gain, their work can often cross over between sectors. At VNIT, the mindset of the
student is oriented towards an innovative & technological problem-solving approach, specifically
empowered by his/her analytical capabilities and technical skills.
Tackling the world’s challenges, big or small, needs a wide range of skill sets, something that all
engineers gain through education and specific skill training. Also, core science and mathematical

knowledge is important for engineers to solve a problem
creatively and analytically.
Additionally, soft skills such as teamwork and
communication are just as important as logic and
computing. Students of VNIT are capable of contributing in
most of the international technical employment groups and
have also proven their excellence by initiating some of the
most innovative start-ups. Overall development of
personality is the core aim of VNIT, which ensures that a
student would be in a position to immensely contribute
towards the growth of the nation.
VNIT has a committed Training and Placement Department
which proactively works to make available the training and
employment opportunities to the students. Most of the
students, seeking placements after the graduation, are
ensured with jobs in reputed multinational companies. Many
students perceive higher education in some of the best
national and international educational institutions. Goldman
Sachs, Ittiam systems, Morgan Stanley, Amazon, TATA
Motors, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, Hero Moto Corp are few
of the prominent names that form the recruiter list at VNIT.

Centre of Academic Collaboration and Research
VNIT believes that a literate & educated citizenry is vital to
a democratic society and a dynamic education system fosters
a productive economy in global environment. The institute
has academic collaborations & MoUs with many

Role of Universities in
Teaching the Skills Needed
to Sustain in a
Knowledge-Based
Economy
f all until now, universities have provided the society with a safe way to gamble with the future, by encouraging
O
innovative research and development that may not have apparent short-term benefits, without incurring major
social or commercial loss. Another most important lesson we learn at college is the ability to challenge the
assumptions and positions of powerful agencies outside the university. There is a risk in tying university and college
programs too closely to immediate labor market needs. The demands in the Labor Market can shift haphazardly, and
specifically, in a knowledge-based society, it is impossible to judge what kinds of businesses or trades will emerge in the
future.
Nevertheless, the rapid development in higher education and the very large sums invested in learning is largely driven by
government, employers and parents wanting a work-force that is competitive, employable and preferably affluent.
Indeed, the universities have always been persuasive about this one role, which started as preparation and training for the
church, then the law and much later, the government administration.
Physiognomies of some knowledge-based workers
For a knowledge-based economy to run efficaciously and effortlessly, it would require people who are focused and
motivated towards contributing numbers in the expansion of the knowledge-based economy. Such knowledge-based
workers are determined and have distinguished characteristics,
•They usually work in small companies, mostly startups.
•They often work on contractual basis, or as part-time workers, so they move around from one job to another fairly
frequently.
•They sometimes are entrepreneurs and are their own bosses; sometimes they have created their own job, which didn’t
exist until they worked out that there was a need and they could strive to meet that need.

In-trend

•They are adaptable to the digital advancements and are competent digitally; digital technology is a key
component of their work contributing to the business.
•There are constant changes in the nature of their work, typically based on response to market and technological
developments and thus the knowledge base of their work is likely to change rapidly.
•They play many roles because they often work for themselves or in small companies. So their role is diversely
covering various verticals of marketing, designing, accounting, sales, managerial responsibilities, technical
support, etc.
•They depend on social media platforms to bring-in business and to keep their knowledge up to date with current
trends in their area of work
•They need to be quick learners to stay on top in their business-space, and they need to manage that learning for
themselves.
•Above all, they need to be flexible, to adapt to rapidly changing conditions around them.

Embedding skills in the curriculum
Most faculties in universities are well trained in content and have a deep understanding of their subject areas.
Expertise in development of skills though, is another matter. It is not that faculty does not help students develop
skills – they do – but whether these intellectual skills match the needs of knowledge-based workers, and whether
enough emphasis is given to development of skills within the curriculum.
Some of the important skills that hold an important role in an individual’s overall development are
communications skills, the ability to learn independently, ethics and responsibility, teamwork and flexibility,
thinking skills, digital skills and knowledge management.
Universities can take that into consideration and look for ways to entrench these skills into curriculum.
•Development of skills is relatively context-specific. Furthermore, these skills need to be rooted within relatively
particular knowledge domain. For example, problem solving in business is different from problem-solving in
medicine. Different processes and approaches are used to solve problems in these domains (for instance, business
tends to be more intuitive, medicine more deductive; business would probably accept a solution that will contain
a higher element of risk or uncertainty, while medicine is more risk averse);
•Skills are often best learned in moderately small steps, with steps increasing gradually as mastery is approached;
•Learners need a lot of practice to reach mastery and consistency in a particular skill;
•Learners need feedback on a regular basis to learn skills quickly and effectively; immediate feedback is usually
better than late feedback;
•Although skills can be learned by trial and error without the intervention of any of the lateral mentors like a
teacher, coach, or technology, development of those skills can be greatly enhanced with appropriate
interventions.

The increasing competitiveness has raised a question on employability for graduates in the knowledge-based
economy. And the question is; Are universities teaching the skills needed in a Knowledge-Based Economy?

Shift needed in teaching
Entrepreneurial
Finance
W
ith the growing demand for
and supply of
entrepreneurial talent in
the country, management colleges have
taken this newer responsibility to equip
the budding entrepreneurs with
managerial talent. One of the key areas
entrepreneurs are found to be
struggling is the way they manage their
finances. Through this article, I am
attempting to address the status quo of
financial management teaching in B-
Schools and the modular shift that may
be needed to teach entrepreneurial
finance.
Currently, a typical management
course in India is structured on a Core
and Specialist model. Few core
management topics are learnt by every
budding manager, typically during a
one year span, whereas, he also
specialises in a specific management
area like finance or marketing in the
second year. Most of the institutes in
India follow outcome based teaching
and learning process. Hence, use of
experiential and case study
methodologies are common. Of late,
there is an increased focus on training
towards entrepreneurial skills as well
over and above a dedicated
specialisation.
The focus area of this article is the area
of finance, where the structure of a
typical management graduation with
finance as specialisation is two-
dimensional – Corporate Finance and
Investment Finance. The corporate
finance subjects generally include subjects Like Working Capital
Management, Capital Structure Theories, Project Appraisal, Strategic
Finance and Multinational Finance. As
can be noticed, these topics mostly
train the budding finance managers to
build in the competency to run the
finance function in the employer
organisation. The investment finance
subjects generally aim to build the
skillset required to be part of the
financial markets, which is an outsider
perspective towards corporate
management. These subjects include,
Security Analysis, Financial Research,
Portfolio Management, Derivatives,
Alternative Investments, Corporate
Valuation, Investment Banking,
Financial Services and Risk
Management.
In addition to these, there are few
courses that either lie between or create
a connect between corporate finance
and investment finance. These are
courses like Mergers & Acquisitions,
Financial Analytics, and Behavioural
Finance. There are also industry
specific courses introduced by few B-
Schools like Insurance Management.
There are also thematic finance course
like Entrepreneurial finance offered by
very few institutes.
Given this context, the following

discussions list the prominent changes that needs immediate
attention of curriculum developers of finance courses in
management institutes:
1. Enhanced Focus on Corporate Finance
Most of the management graduates were lacking on their
corporate finance tools and techniques knowledge. There is
a tendency to be fancied towards careers in financial
markets, especially capital markets. Skillsets like
conducting a cost-benefit analysis, project appraisal were
mostly learnt by the students more as numerical problem-
solving activities rather than a real business problem
solving enabler.
2. International Finance as a theme
The curriculum of most Universities and B-Schools, does
have international finance as a business. (In some cases, it
can be found that International Business is a
Specialisation). And the above are not covered in-depth
(especially in MBA curriculum) with a practical approach.
Students do learn about parity theories and arbitrage
concept, but, they fail to see the practical application of the
same. The suggested way would be to ensure the theme of
international as part of every course in the curriculum.
3. Compliance Knowledge
One of the key risk that entrepreneurs operate in is
regulatory risk. The very fact that multinational
corporations operate in multiple countries, invariably their
preference is not to involve in regulatory tiff to the least.
The current curriculum in many Indian Universities and
business schools do offer courses like Business Laws, but
the coverage is limited to Indian regulations. Finance
students also study tax laws in addition.

4. The State of Global Economy
The knowledge of current affairs at world level is still a gap
area. There are instances where corporates have given
feedback to institutes from where they recruited about the
students, who could were not aware of events like BREXIT,
let aside the knowledge of its impacts on the specific
industries and companies.
5. Ability to take research and data analytics based
decisions
Investors, when screen ideas from entrepreneurs, wish to
see proposals that are based on factual data, rigorously
analysed and research based. The management education
today is mostly book and case based. Currently,
management students’ exposure to research is only through
few subjects like Quantitative Techniques and Research
Methodology. A special training for financial research is
missing largely from the management curriculums.
Curriculum may include course like financial engineering,
financial research and financial analytics.
6. Higher attention to ethical finance
One of the key area where modern age businesses need to
be very sensitive about would be the issue of ethics. The
institutes do teach ethics as part of the management
curriculum, in most cases, as a subject. An increases
importance to be given in each of the finance course on the
ethical issues that might creep in while managing an
international business. The ethics can be an added
complexity in the case studies administered in the different
finance course.
Thus, upping the competency of budding entrepreneurs
through above changes made in the curriculum and
pedagogy, management schools, can make the students
entrepreneurship-ready.
At International School of management Excellence (ISME),
Bangalore many of the above recommendations have been
incorporated. Entrepreneurship eco system along with
various activities involving entrepreneurial knowledge is an
integral part of the ISME program.

Presidency University:
Aims to Reach the Pinnacle of Excellence
Presidency University has a unique place in history. It was one of the rst few institutes of Western-type higher
education in Asia. In 1817, a group of enlightened Indians and Englishmen set up the Hindoo College. is was
taken over by the British Government in 1855 as the College of the Bengal Presidency, and placed in 1857 under
the newly founded Calcutta University. Over the next hundred years and more, Presidency College was Bengal’s
pre-eminent center of higher learning. e formal establishment of Presidency University in July 2010 allowed it
to refashion its venerable traditions and continuing strengths into a leading institution of the future.
The Glorious History is its Greatest
Strength
Two hundred years ago a civic
initiative in the city of Calcutta led to
the establishment of an institution for
imparting liberal education. In our
history of educational institutions
attaining global modernity, Presidency
University has proved its competency
time and again. When the Government
proposed on 27 November 1852 to turn
Hindoo College into a public
institution open to all communities, the
College was on its way to become one
of the pioneering academic institutions
in the world. During the nineteenth
century, the faculty and students of
Presidency College played an
innovative part in the making of Indian
modernity and the articulation of its
many persons. In the early twentieth
century, they met the challenge of
contesting colonial power while
creatively engaging with Europe in the
domain of generating and
disseminating new forms of
knowledge. Home to a galaxy of
dedicated scholar-teachers and brilliant
students, Presidency College maintained its status as India’s premier
institution for higher education in the
early decades after independence.
This challenge of a magnificent history
and esteemed tradition is their utmost
asset. In recognition of this rich
heritage and academic excellence, the
Legislature of West Bengal conferred
the status of a University on
Presidency College. This was enacted
with a view to empower Presidency
University to function more efficiently

he aim of education is gaining knowledge, not of facts, but of values” –William S. Burroughs
T
Development of any nation solely depends on the quality of human resources; and good human resource is produced through
quality education. Education provides people with an opportunity to reflect on the social, cultural, moral, economic, and
spiritual issues and contributes towards the development through propagation of specialized knowledge and skills.
India, even after 70 years of its independence, is far away from the goal of universal literacy. The fact that India’s higher
education system is churning out millions of graduates who are unemployable speaks of the need to improve the quality of
education in the country. However, on a positive note, India is engaged in the use of higher education as a powerful tool to
st
build a knowledge-based information society of the 21 Century. Indian professionals are considered among the best in the
world and are in great demand. This signifies the inherent strength of the Indian educational system.
Going Back to the Roots
Education in India dates back to its early civilization time where teaching and learning process revolved around the ‘Gurukul
System’. It was a residential concept wherein the students were educated under the guidance of a “Guru” in different areas of
religion, philosophy and science. Historians speculate that these centers had a remarkable resemblance to the European
medieval universities that came up much later.
The initial education system in India gradually got obscured due to subsequent invasions and disorder in the country. In the
early modern age, the Islamic influences enriched the traditional learning centers and brought in the disciplines of Geography,
Administration, Law, and Arabic Mathematics to India.
A major change in the design of higher education was brought by the European rulers. The British established the formal
system of higher education focused on languages, literature, history, and philosophy. These learning centers were focused on
generating English-speaking working-class people for the British administrative services, army and trade. The British model
of University system, inspired by the University of London, continued to expand across India, leading to a rising number of
higher learning centers by 1947.
The higher education system in India grew rapidly after independence. By 1980, there were 132 universities and 4738
colleges, enrolling around five per cent of the eligible age group in higher education. The number of institutions in India is
four times more than the number of institutions both in the United States and the entire Europe.
Present-day Scenario
India is dashing headlong towards economic success and modernization. It is counting on high-tech industries, such as IT and
Biotechnology, to propel the nation to prosperity. Currently, Indian higher education system has many favorable factors to its
advantage. India has a large higher education sector, the third largest in the world. It uses English as a principal language of
higher education and research and has an extensive academic tradition. Academic liberty is appreciated and there are a small
number of high-quality institutions that can form the foundation of quality education. The fact that State Government, rather
than Central Government, maneuvers vital responsibility for higher education, creates a rather cumbersome structure, but the
system allows for a diversity of policies and approaches.
Yet the weakness clearly outweighs the strengths. India educates approximately 10 per cent of its youths in higher education.
Even though, none of its universities occupy a solid position at the top. A few of the best universities have some excellent
departments and centers, and there are a small number of outstanding undergraduate colleges.
UGC recently released a report describing the current scenario of the Indian Higher Education System. It shows that despite
the growing numbers of colleges and enrollments, it is not adequate enough to cater to the educational needs of the increasing
young population.
Measures to Improve the Quality of Higher Education
One of the most efficient ways of tackling the problem of poor educational quality is by sharing the resources between private
and public schools. It is vital to remember that the quality of education is directly linked to the resources available and it is
important for the government to improve the resource allocation to bring about qualitative changes in the field of education.
To enable the higher education sector to take on the emerging competition from the Asian countries, there is a need to loosen
the hold of the government over the higher educational institutions.
The Government should undertake the following measures to improve the quality of higher education:

A Brief Account of
Higher Education
Encouraging
Individuality
Albert Einstein once
said, “Everyone’s a
genius. But if you judge a
fish on its ability to climb a
tree, it will live its whole life
believing that it is stupid.” With
the difference in ability, aptitude and
interest of a student and the societal
demands of expertise and specialization,
the standardized testing and curriculum does
not give much scope for the students to relate to
the world of work and wages. Creativity that has
nurtured our influences in almost all of life’s passions
and interests drops dead at standardized tests. The current
educational system expects conformity and rewards
predictable behaviors, both intellectually and emotionally.
Tech-Savvy Methods of Teaching
The new technologies offer vast opportunities for progress in
all walks of life. The focus should not be on installing
hardware but creating new, high-quality content such as
intelligent teaching systems and tools that will help students
to hone basic skills like reading and mathematics, and
developing content in multiple Indian languages. Free high-
speed internet connections can be provided to all schools
through a simple scheme by which the government could
reimburse internet service providers directly.
Making the Curriculum Dynamic
Currently, the curriculum in higher education is outdated in
most cases. It is stale, dogmatic and teaches things that the
world has moved on with. To infuse dynamism, the
curriculum needs to be progressive in nature. Students need to
be given the option of doing multiple courses. The spirit of
curriculum should be projects-driven and not exams-driven.
High-Tech Libraries
The university libraries have a very good collection of books,
but they are all in mess. A library must be online and helpful
for serious study. Indian universities should concentrate more
on providing quality education which is equivalent to that of
the global standards. Instituting this notion in the education
system will be of great help as anyone will be able to access
the
books
and
required
study
materials from
anywhere with
amazing
effortlessness.
Moreover, the E-libraries
can be updated swiftly with
new material and books.
The Power of Alumni
One of the most unappreciated
potentials in Indian education system is
the power of the Alumni. Excluding the
IIT’s and a few other top institutes, the
concept of Alumni networking is non-existent.
Once you launch a sincere network which is transparent, it would give the avenue as well as the confidence for the alumni to contribute in terms of money or academic expertise.
Keeping in perspective the rapid changes taking
place in the society, higher education should
possess various qualities like inculcation of
confidence and ability to take responsibility and
prepare students to be effective within the
circumstances of their lives and work, and
promote the pursuit of excellence in
development and application of knowledge and
skills. Government should take certain
appropriate policy measures to improve the
education system. India, today, is one of the
fastest developing countries of the world. And
hence, needs an educational system that is
modern, liberal and can adapt to the changing
needs of a changing society, a changing
economy and a changing world.

he education system is not static, but dynamic. Education, globally, is in transformation. 2025
marks 75 years of constitutional democracy, 35 years of economic liberalization and 20 years of
accelerated educational reforms for India at a time when the world’s oldest civilization is also its
youngest nation. The Indian higher education system has undergone massive expansion to become the
second largest in the world. Despite ongoing debate about whether they can and should, most higher
education institutions include the development of employability skills within their curriculum. However,
employers continue to report that graduates are not ready for the world of work, and lack some of the most
basic skills needed for successful employment. Higher educational institutions devise a curriculum to bridge the
skill gap. Academics alone can’t assure jobs for students. They need to have access to holistic experience to
equip them for every aspect of their life and career. The role of educators is to guide them not just towards
academic excellence but various co-curricular, extra-curricular and community service of which they could be
passionate and proud. Once all these factors come together, their employability quotient will automatically rise. It
is the responsibility of the higher educational institutions to develop the curriculum incorporating all these factors
to make the students employable. The problem of unemployment can be solved only when the institutions focus on
enhancing employable skills of the students.
st
Educators today have to keep in mind that the 21 century learners have a very different profile. He/she prepares
himself to use those technologies in near future that haven’t been invented so far. He/she is likely to undertake jobs
that don’t exist today. The students remain networked globally. They prefer to get engaged in multiple tasks; are
digitally literate and have strong visual and spatial skills. They remain tethered to the internet; want to learn things that
matter and look for challenging jobs. A number of personal and social skills popularly known as soft skills have become
imperative for enhancing employability in both wage and self- employment.
India has seen rapid growth in recent years, due to the growth in new-age industries. The demand for a new level of quality
of service has increased with the increase in purchasing power. It is important to note that the knowledge, skill and dynamic
workforce forms the backbone of our economy. To reap the benefits of such a young workforce, we need to implement the
reforms in the education system and also bring forth new factors of production, namely knowledge, skills and technology
which have the ability to unleash the productive frontiers of the economy in the most efficient and dynamic way. If India
needs to emerge as a developed nation in next 20 to 25 years, then it has to improve and develop its human resource, which
is as important as natural resources of the country. It is possible only by focusing on enhancing employable skills of the
students. Public and private enterprises should work together and look for the required upliftment of higher education and
improve employable skills.

of time a very common and humble person hailing from a nondescript village called Purbagool, Asimganj
situated in the district of Karimganj in Assam. He was raised amidst umpteen struggles against poverty having
lost both his parents at an early age. From a very tender age, he had taken the onus of his studies upon himself by
taking tuition classes to young students in his own vicinity and also by selling home-grown vegetables in the
market. But unfazed by all the financial difficulties, he went on with his studies and ultimately came out with
flying colors from prestigious Aligarh Muslim University in the year 2000 by holding rank in MCA from the
department of Computer Science.
Mahbubul Hoque has diligently shaped his career as an Educational Entrepreneur. His first educational venture
was Central IT College which he started in the year 2001 with minimal amenities and just 4 students. Central IT
College soon became the second best study-centre of Sikkim Manipal University in the whole country. Mahbubul
Hoque continued his struggle in the field of education and succeeded to achieve milestone one after another
traversing several impediments to set up the institutions in Assam and later in Meghalaya with allied educational
activities in other states of North Eastern Part of India.

t is absolutely certain that the
I
learning and curriculum in our
MBA Programs which include
Marketing, Finance, Operations,
Human Relations and General
Management, are of critical value for
entrepreneurs. However, the big
differences in the tools required, to
teach entrepreneurs are as follows:
(I) Different Learning processes
A potential entrepreneur is hungry to
imbibe the learnings, which will make
him successful in business. As such
whilst teaching entrepreneurs at the
post graduate level, we have to accept
that it is the student, who has to come
prepared to the class, having already
read the topic to be covered in the
day’s lecture and raise his doubts,
before we commence teaching. At the
end of the class, he may again seek
further clarifications, however, he will
often want to re-connect with his
Professor, later in the day, as he reads
in the Library, some articles on the
topic, covered during the day's lecture.
Faculty have to start their lectures, by first asking for questions and should be available after the class, for responding to further questions, which will arise in an entrepreneurs mind, as he tries to digest the complexities, of the topic in question.
Only a third of the teaching hours,
should be devoted towards lectures
given by the faculty and a third of the
time, should be spent in case
presentations by the entrepreneurs and
the dialogue, which follows thereafter.
Further, the remaining one-third is to
be spent in seminars and workshops,
where the entrepreneurs take the lead,
is delivering the conclusions, of the
research undertaken by them and
fellow students, then debate the issues
involved, with them.
(ii) Faculty Coaching ‘Potential
Entrepreneurs’ in Business
Incubation Centres, should also
have a broader orientation about
business
This is a major problem in India, since
60 % of the Faculty in B-Schools in
our country have ‘ZERO’ experience,
in having done business and they have
never worked at ‘Top Management’
levels, in corporate organizations. Only
when a professional has worked at top
management levels, does he get a clear
‘Perspective View’ of how different
Functions connect or conflict, in their
approaches and how these issues are
resolved, at a CEO level and why some
Business plans and strategies produce
the promised results, and why the
others, cut a sorry figure.
It is true that 20% of Faculty in B-
Schools in India, have 10-15 years
professional management experience,
but the awkward secret does emerge,
soonest one discovers, that they are in
fact ‘REFFUGES’ from the corporate
world, having quit at Junior / Middle
levels, since they found the going too
tough, in today’s very competitive
market place. They do not have the
intellectual horsepower, to teach
entrepreneurs.
58November
Education. Innovation. Success
NOWLEDGEREVIEW
T
H
E
NOWLEDGEREVIEW

As such the tools required to teach
entrepreneurs are available only with at
best 20% of the Faculty, in Indian B-
Schools, who have spent at least 10
years in top management positions.
(iii) Additional Learning Inputs,
need to be imparted in
Incubation Centres
Entrepreneurs need to be taught that
87% of all new start-ups fail and as
such they need to have the
perseverance, to accept several
failures, in their first venture. Each
failure, will serve to give them a lot of
learning, which will contribute towards
later success, in their business. As such
the projects assigned to Entrepreneurs,
should have a very high ‘Slog
Quotient’, which prepares them for the
tough life they will face, when they
launch their business ventures.
Workshops and simulated exercises
including dynamic case studies get the
entrepreneurial spirit alive as they
create environments of learning
making the entrepreneurs more flexible
and agile to react to the demands of the
marketplace.
Entrepreneurs also need to be taught in
great detail how business partnerships
break-up sometimes in the 1st
nd
generation, but more often in the 2
generation, due to sibling rivalries.
Finally, Entrepreneurs need to be
taught that there should always be a
built-in ‘Exit Clauses’, in all
Partnership Agreements. Entrepreneurs
need to be taught, that finally the
panacea for these troubles, lies in
eventually professionalizing the
business, whereby the owners, may not
eventually have any serious role, in managing the business.
I would like to add
a quote by R. H
Cabell:
“I love business
because it is
competitive,
because it rewards
deeds rather than
words. I love
business because it
compels
earnestness and
does not permit me
to neglect today’s
task while thinking
of tomorrow. I love
business because it
undertakes to
please, not reform;
because it is
honestly selfish,
thereby avoiding
hypocrisy and
sentimentality. I
love business
because it promptly
penalizes mistakes,
selfishness and
inefficiency, while
rewarding those
that give it the best
they have in them.
Lastly, I love
business because
each day is a fresh
adventure”.
