Art of Probing Presented By: Archita Singh

Introduction Probing  is a   skill  of asking penetrating questions in response to a learner 's initial answer.  Probing  leads a learner to discover the relationships , similarities and differences that distinguish new concepts from old.

The Funnel Effect

Probing Questions Probing questions  are not just about clarifying specific details; instead, these  questions  dig much deeper than the surface. An effective  probing question  helps to get a person to talk about their personal opinions and feelings, and promotes critical thinking

Clarification Purpose Relevance Repetition Extension Evaluation Emotional

Spot the signals Vagueness Judgment Clarify the detail

Common Mistakes asking too many questions at once asking a question and answering it yourself asking a difficult question too early always asking the same type of question asking a question in a threatening way not using probing questions not giving students enough time to think ignoring answers not correcting wrong answers failing to see the implications of answers failing to build on answers.

Why do People Probe? To actively involve students in the lesson To increase motivation or interest To evaluate students’ preparation To check on completion of work To develop critical thinking skills To review previous lessons To nurture insights To assess achievement or mastery of goals and objectives To stimulate independent learning

How Many Questions? When?

Wait-Time For higher cognitive questions, no wait-time threshold was observed. Researchers noted that students seemed to become more engaged and successful the longer the teacher waited (within reason, of course).

Give Students Time to Think Respond at greater length and with greater confidence; Offer more unsolicited, but appropriate, responses . Offer more diverse, alternative explanations; relate responses to those from other students.

Impactful Learning For impactful learning, our inquisitive minds tends towards questioning for every possible aspect with the topic . We learn more when question, because we in depth of learning the concepts.
