5. SUMMARY (Matthew. 2). Herod the Great was appointed King of Judea by the Romans and ruled from 37 B.C. to 4 B. C. He was an Idumaean (an Edomite, a descendant of Esau). He is mentioned in the New Testament only in Matthew 2 and Luke 1. Herod was ambitious, a leader of men, and a great builder. He engaged in many building projects, but his most magnificent achievement was the restoration and enlargement of the temple in Jerusalem which was begun in 20/19 B. C. The temple proper was completed in a few years, but other building work and additions continued until about A. D. 64 long after his death. Although he was a clever politician, Herod was unpredictable, merciless, and cruel. The family of Herod was totally immoral with so many intermarriages the family tree is almost impossible to trace. 6. Matthew Chapters 1-3 set the stage with Jesus’s ministry set right onto the storyline of the OT. It starts with the genealogy of Jesus which highlights how he is from the messianic line of David and is a son of Abraham indicating that he will bring God’s blessing to all the nations of the earth ( Genesis 12:3 ). Then we get the famous story of the birth of Jesus and how this fulfills all the OT prophetic promises. These fulfillments are to show that Jesus is not merely a human but is really “God with us.” Presentation title 6

7. Wise Men (Magi) in the East which saw a new and very bright star in the sky. To them it was the sign of a newborn king. They set off in the direction of the star to bring Him gifts.

8. They travelled at night following the star and rested during the day.

9. It was a long trip taking many weeks. 

10. When the star led them to the land of Israel they headed for Jerusalem where Herod the Great was ruler.

11. The men (Magi), all important decision makers in their own land, went to Herod’s palace.

12. “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

14. Herod called the chief priest and teachers of the law and asked where the Messiah was to be born. They got out the ancient scrolls of the prophets.
