What is an EGRA? EGRA stands for Early Grades Reading Assessment which is a standardized tool recognized for assessing early grade reading.
Why Conduct Early Grade Reading Assessments? Every child is unique and so is his/her learning style. It has become evident that in order to promote a child’s education and growth, critical information needs to be gathered on his work and performance.
Why Conduct Early Grade Reading Assessments? EGRA helps in identifying key skills and areas of instruction that need to be improved. It evaluates outcomes of programs designed to improve literacy, and informs the education sector on strategic planning, resource allocation, and budgeting .

How to administer the EGRA? (pre-administration) Prepare both the TEACHER’S MATERIAL and PUPIL’S MATERIAL Secure a stopwatch. Familiarize yourself GENERALLY with both tools. Familiarize yourself with the INSTRUCTIONS that are attached to each TASK. Provide yourself with the following: a. 2 pencils – one for scoring, marking errors that examinees make, and jotting down reading behaviors; another one for the child’s use during the dictation part. b. spare pieces of paper for your markings c. paper for the examinee ( according to grade level) NOTE: Maintain an eye to eye contact with the examinee. Never wear sunglasses.
How to administer the EGRA? (during administration) Get hold of the TEACHER’S MATERIAL. (It’s actually the EGRA toolkit) Give the PUPIL’S MATERIAL to the examinee. (It’s actually the pupil’s stimuli booklet) Do some prompts that will make the examinee feel that you’re just going to conduct a reading game. NO PRESSURES must be felt by the examinee. ESTABLISH FRIENDSHIP WITH THE EXAMINEE BEFORE GETTING STARTED. Start the administration per TASK. Give clear instructions to the examinee. These are found in the toolkit. (TEACHER’S MATERIAL) Be DISCRETE in marking errors that examinees make. Clearly mark any incorrect responses with a slash (/).
How to administer the EGRA? (during administration) 8. Count self-corrections as correct. If you’ve already marked the self-corrected responses as incorrect, circle the letter and proceed. Stay quiet, except when providing answers as follows: (early stop rule) a. If the child hesitates for 3 seconds, provide the correct response; point to the next and say…” Sige padayon la.” b. Mark the response you provided to the child as incorrect. c. If the examinee does not give a single correct response on the first line, say….” Salamat .” Discontinue this task, then, check the box at the bottom and proceed to the next task. d. Record time remaining on stopwatch (if the examinee completes the task with number of seconds required)
How to administer the EGRA? (during administration) e. If examinee reaches 60 seconds say…” Undang na. ” Mark the final read with a bracket. Two tasks are not timed and these are: initial sound identification and listening comprehension In the dictation part, read the sentence once, at about one word per second. Then, give the examinee a pencil and paper. Read the sentence a second time, pausing 5 seconds between groups of words. Wait up to 15 seconds ( if the examinee does not finish) , and read the whole sentence again. Remember to write the student code on the dictation task.
How to administer the EGRA? (post administration) After conducting the tasks, say…” Tapos na kita han aton mulay han pagbasa ,” Commend the examinee by saying, “ Makarit ngan maupay an imo ginbuhat .” Say, “ Salamat han imo bulig .” Note: You may give the examinee a reward like candies or any sweets. 14. Prepare the templates for scoring!
