The Fault In Our Stars
Trailer and poster analysis
The lowkey lighting in
this shot suggests that
it is night time
This is the first shot of
the trailer, telling the
audience that she
could be the main
character.
She is wearing a white
top which could
suggest that she is
young and innocent as
the colour white often
connotes purity.
She is lying flat on grass suggesting that she
could be star gazing. This links in with the title
of the film ‘The fault on our stars’
In the trailer we can
hear her voice as a
voice over which is
typical of the teen
drama genre and
suggests that she
could be the main
character.
The audience can also hear non diegetic
music that is slow and calming. It is also
somewhat sad, suggesting the overall
tone of the film.
This is a medium long
shot of the main
character ‘Hazel’
where she is
positioned slightly left
allowing the audience
to also see what is
happening in the
background
‘Hazel’ has a white tshirt and denim
jacket on, these comfortable
clothes are typical of teenagers and
young adults.
She is wearing a
cannula suggesting to
the audience that she
may have cancer.
The realistic high key
lighting shows this
scene is set during the
day, opposing the last.
The woman in the car in the background
has her head out the window watching
‘Hazel’ with a smile on her face. This
could suggest that she is her mother.
The empty car park gives
a sense of loneliness and
could suggest that ‘Hazel’
feels alone.
A new character is
introduced to us in
this shot and the first
time we see ‘Hazel’
smile. This could
suggest they have a
close relationship.
Their close proximity
could suggest that
there may be an
element of romance.
It appears that the pair are on public
transport. This tells the audience that
maybe neither of them drive. It allows the
younger audience to relate.
There are buildings and lots of people
around them suggesting they could
live in a busy town or city.
The lowkey lighting in
this shot suggests that
it is night time
Augustus is carrying
‘hazel’ and appears to
be rushing. Suggesting
that something bad
has happened
We can see a sign above
the building they are
entering which is red and
could read ‘Emergency’
The background is out
of focus in this shot
causing the audiences
focus to stay on the
two characters.
‘Hazel’s’ face is
screwed up as though
she is crying or in pain.
Here we can see the
company behind the
film which will make
the audience want to
watch the film
because they are a
large institution.
The navy blue
background links in
with the theme of
night time.
There are stars
scattered all over the
background which
links in with the title of
the film. This shows a
strong brand identity.
These blues and white
are a common theme
throughout the trailer.
The realistic slightly
low key lighting gives a
romantic vibe in this
scene suggesting their
relationship may have
blossomed
‘Hazel’ wears blue which is a running theme
throughout the film. It contrasts with the
smiler on her face as blue is often depicted as
a sad colour.
This is an over the
shoulder shot of
‘Hazel’ looking at
‘Augustus’ where he is
in the foreground and
out of focus and she is
the main focus of the
shot.
The wine glasses in
the background
suggest that they
could be in a
restaurant and
potentially on a date.
This insert is used
throughout the trailer
when adding
information, quotes or
introducing a
character.
This font is used
throughout the
marketing campaign
for this film and is a
good use of branding
due to the fact that
people will recognise
the typography.
The colours are also used
a lot in the marketing
campaign creating a
strong brand.
The two characters are
positioned slightly off
centre and are holding
eachother in a tight
embrace suggesting
they are in love
Their casual clothes
make them appear
comfortable
The realistic lighting
suggests to the
audience that this shot
is in the day time
They are both in blue
jeans and we can also
see other elements of
blue in this shot which
links to the strong
branding
The final shot links
back to the first shot
of ‘Hazel’
The lowkey lighting in
this shot suggests that
it is night time
She is in the same
position lying on the
grass
This is a close up shot
allowing the audience
to see her emotion
•How long is the sequence?
1 minute 29 seconds
•What information does it give you about the genre and narrative?
From the trailer we can infer that it is a teen drama with potential elements of comedy and tragedy. We
learn from the trailer that it is about 2 cancer patients who go through a lot together and fall in love.
•Does it leave an enigma?
The trailer leaves the audience wondering if they survive and how their relationship progresses.
•Target Audience?
The audience addressed would be teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14-26 this is because
the main characters are teenagers and it is based around their life and how they overcome their
struggles. It is also focused on new love. The trailer appeals to both genres however I think that it
primarily appeals to a female audience due to the sensitive theme and the romance element.
•How will this help my production?
I think that this could help my production as it enabled me to gain a clearer understanding of the
common codes and conventions within a trailer as well as within the teen drama genre. It also allowed
me to understand how I can include other hybrid genres into our film. The narrative of the film has also
given me ideas for my own production.
The main image in the poster is of a teenage boy and girl
in very close proximity to each other
to show they are in love and that the
movie is a love story.
The girl in the image is wearing a cannula and her hair
is very short which suggests that she
might have a medical condition like
cancer.
The colour scheme is mostly blue
and whit and this might be because
this movie was adapted from a book
and that was the colour scheme of
the book front cover. The main image
also has a lot of colour but they are
subtle, natural colours which are
quite relaxing. The blue and white title
is placed over the darker part of the
image so it contrasts and is easily
visible.
There aren’t really any credits on this
poster except a small 20th century
fox logo at the bottom left. Which
tells the audience the company
behind the film which may make
them want to watch it if they know
other films also by 20
th
century fox
There is text at the top which says it
was based on a bestselling book and
this attracts the attention of lots of
people and makes them want to see
it as they now know it is based on a
good book so it will probably be a
good movie.
The biggest, most prominent text is the
bit at the bottom middle which must be
the title of the movie, it’s called ‘The
Fault in Our Stars’ which is a
ambiguous so it makes people want to
see the movie to find out more. The
slogan underneath says ‘one sick love
story’ which makes it clear to the
audience that it is actually a romance
but that there’s a twist as one or both of
them are sick.
The release date is at the bottom under
the title.
