THE FUNCTION OF PRAYER IN EVANGELISM Jansen & Gloria Trotman
An indispensable element Prayer is not just a helpful additive or an attractive frill to the evangelistic program; it is an indispensable ingredient; it is the lifeblood of evangelism.
Jesus, the Man of Prayer Matthew 26:39
Our Great Example "For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps” (1 Peter 2:21) “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6) Jesus spent all night in prayer (Luke 6:12).
Other Prayer Warriors Jacob wrestled with the Angel – Genesis 32:24-28. Paul and Silas sang and prayed in the jail at midnight – Acts 16:25-36.
What Are We Doing Here? We are in spiritual warfare - Ephesians 6:12. Our weapons are spiritual, 2 Corinthians 10:4. Prayer is our most awesome weapon.
Prayer Can Do Anything God Can Do
Preparation For The Evangelistic Crusade “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray and seek my face… then I will hear from heaven…” 2 Chronicles 7:14
To Remove All Hindrances “There is nothing that Satan fears so much as that the people of God shall clear the way by removing every hindrance, so that the Lord can pour out His Spirit…
To Remove All Hindrances …When the way is prepared for the Spirit of God, the blessings come.” (1 Selected Messages, p. 124
To Carry On the Work of God “As activity increases and men become successful in doing any work for God, there is danger of trusting to human plans and methods…
To Carry On the Work of God …Only the work accomplished with much prayer,…will in the end prove to have been efficient for good” (Desire of Ages, p. 362 ).
To Seek the Holy Spirit “We should daily receive the holy oil that we may impart to others… All may be light bearers to the world if they will…There is now need for much prayer” ( T estimonies to Ministers, p. 511 ).
What Happens When We Seek The Holy Spirit? “The Spirit came upon the waiting, praying disciples with a fullness that reached every heart.
What Happens When We Seek The Holy Spirit? The Infinite One revealed Himself in power to His church… the sword of the Spirit… cut its way through unbelief. Thousands were converted in a day” (Acts of the Apostles, p. 38 ).
To Reach Hearts “Through much prayer you must labor for souls, for this is the only method by which you can reach hearts….It is not your work that impresses hearts.” Evangelism, p. 342
To Wake Up “Satanic agencies in human form will take part in this last great conflict to oppose the building up of the kingdom of God.
To Wake Up “ There needs to be much more of prayer, much more of earnest effort among professed believers” ( 4 Bible Commentary, p.1142 ).
