Course Description This course focuses on the application of ideas and methods of the social sciences to understand, investigate, and examine challenges of contemporary community life. It focuses on community-action initiatives such as community engagement, solidarity, and citizenship as guided by the core values of human rights, social justice, empowerment and advocacy, gender equality, and participatory development. It aims at enhancing students’ sense of shared identity and willingness to contribute to the pursuit of the common good of the community. It enables students to integrate applied social sciences into community-action initiatives.

OBJECTIVES GUIDE QUESTIONS Explain the importance of studying community dynamics and community action in relation to applied social sciences and the learner’s future career options. Why is it important to study the community and its dynamics? How important is the study of community to our future as an individual and as a collective? How can critical knowledge about the community affects us and others?

Please reflect: Have you ever asked what your role is in the grand scheme that what we call society? Do you ever feel small to a point that you question your value to the social environment you are in? Have you been curious to know how your current decisions would affect your personal future and the future of your family members or even the world around you?

The Living Commune Community Defined by two characteristics: location and social identification First, a community can be defined simply as a group of individuals bound within a specific geographic location. This means that a group of people living in a specific area can already be called a community Second, community is an example of a collective that identify common traits, goals, or customs. It can be argued that communities bind individuals into a collective whole.

The Basics of Community Self-help is a concept about how individuals seek personal development without the help of others. Defines a community once each individual wants and needs intersect, therefore justifying a need to unify. Community ownership Is the level of commitment and accountability that an individual has for the community.

The Basics of Community Community Participation Individuals can provide their own contributions through acts of volunteerism in projects and other communal initiatives Is not only focused on being part of an ongoing project but an individual should also be an active member y taking part in the managerial and organizational development of the community. Access and Equity These are the goals that a commune must strive for to create a better society They imply the ease in which various individuals and groups can attain the basic necessities and resources.

The Community as a Movement Advocacies Are formed by the community and its leaders Communities try to garner support from other individuals or groups which are aligned with their worldviews Networking A network of actors that find commonalities and avenues for cooperation and partnership. They imply the ease in which various individuals and groups can attain the basic necessities and resources.

The Community as a Movement Social Action T akes place when the foundation of advocacies and networking stands out.

Community Dynamics & Community Action

was derived form the Latin word “ communis ” which means common or shared. Thus the general understanding of the word community is that it is a social unit compose of people who have something in common.  

Communities may be formed into two ways; Geographical – the members of the community share the same geographical vicinity, such as a village, province, our neighbourhood. Non-Geographical - these communities are formed based on needs, ideas, interest, identity, practices and rules and social institutions such as at home, at work and government, society or the community at large. 1 2

Communities may also be divided into two levels; Micro level – a group is formed based on personal social ties. This may include groups formed for pursuing common interest or goals, like forming a small organization to hold a fundraising activity such as concert. Macro level – large groups affiliations are formed such as national, international and virtual communities. Companies and corporations may develop various programs that would include the different members across the country. They will work on meeting certain objectives and expand on the aspect of the community involvement.

Communities play diverse roles regardless of its type and these are as follows; -Community consultation -Joint planning -Joint design -Joint delivery -Implementation of community led activities Members of the community consult one another to be able to implement their plans and collaborate with one another to achieve them.

Types of activities that can be planed and executed by the communities; Asset Transfer – the process of transferring ownership or leasehold of a property Making Better Use of Physical Resources - use of physical resources Lorem ipsum dolor sit . – the community may decide on their priorities, designs and services to be conducted based on their goals. Two Fundamental Components Physical Infrastructure Social Info-Structure - wires, computers and technologies required to establish internet connectivity. - consist of on-going process of engaging people in purposeful applications of the physical connectivity.  

What is Community Action?

- is any activity that aims to increase the understanding, engagement and empowerment of communities for the intention of giving services to people. It is also described as as a social action or community engagement. Activities are aligned with the objectives based on the roles that the community plays. In community action, local citizens engage in planning, design and delivery of local services.
