Surgical assistants are frequently surgeons in training They are in theatre to help the senior surgeon and to learn as much as possible
Role of surgical assistant PREPARATION AT SURGERY AFTER SURGERY
Preparation Assistants should review the anatomy and the operation before surgery so that they can anticipate and understand the actions of the senior surgeon.They should start scrubbing first, having checked that the patient is ready for theatre. Trainees should write important steps of proposed operation in brief on a board in the operating theatre. Assistant should be well versed with the steps of surgery
Scrubbing
Pre-op orders: blood investigations,scan, specific tests for that particular surgery. Check the fitness for surgery Prepare the parts Marking the site and side to be operated Informed written consent
AT SURGERY The assistant should try to provide the surgeon with the best access possible by placing and holding retractors and showing the surgeon the field where they are working. Instruments and retractors should always be asked for by name.
After surgery The assistant should help transfer the patient safely off the table and may write the operative note. They should keep a log of all operations attended and what they have learnt from each case. They should be aware of the complication both secondary to surgery and anaesthetic that can happen postoperatively and should anticipate and monitor the patient in post surgical unit. If any complication occur, should manage accordingly.
Proper analgesic should be given. Other supportive measures include fluid, antibiotics and ventilation if needed Monitoring Vitals, SpO2, systemic examination
