The Legend of the Salmon People: A Sto:lo Story Adapted by : Tinoy James
Once upon a time, in the rivers and streams of the Sto:lo people, there lived the Salmon People. These salmon were not just fish; they were magical beings who brought food and life to the people of the river.
Every year, the Salmon People would embark on a long journey from the ocean to the rivers. They would swim upstream, jumping over rocks and waterfalls to reach their home.
One young salmon, named Silverfin , dreamed of making the journey for the first time. "I want to be strong and bring food to my people," Silverfin said bravely.
An old, wise salmon named Elderfin said, "Remember, Silverfin , our journey is not easy. We must be strong and work together."
Silverfin and the other salmon faced many obstacles. They swam through swift currents and jumped over high waterfalls. "We can do it together!" Silverfin cheered.
One day, they encountered a great bear fishing in the river. "We must be careful," Elderfin warned. "The bear is hungry."
Silverfin swam up to the bear and said, "Great Bear, we are on a journey to bring life to our people. Will you let us pass?" The bear nodded and said, "I will take only what I need."
After many days, Silverfin and the salmon finally reached their home in the river. They were tired but happy. "We did it!" Silverfin said with joy.
The salmon laid their eggs, bringing new life to the river. The Sto:lo people celebrated, knowing that the salmon had fulfilled their promise. "Thank you, Salmon People," they sang.
Silverfin became a legend among the salmon. Every year, young salmon would hear the story of Silverfin and dream of making their own journey
And so, the legend of the Salmon People reminded everyone of the importance of strength, bravery, and working together. The end.
