Session objectives

The BIG picture HE today: What is the context in which we are operating? What’s changing? What are the challenges?

The BIG picture What’s changing in HE today? Submit your responses in mentimeter : https://www.menti.com Voting Code: 89931565 https://www.menti.com/alq3hpijapwo

Tensions We can experience changes and challenges as TENSIONS: ‘A wide variety of dichotomies, dualities, conflicts, inconsistencies, and contradictory pulls or demands experienced by those in a particular setting that appear to represent different and contradictory poles and, as such, seem to require a choice of one or the other.’ ( Bartunek and Rynes , 2014)

PUSH PULL Dualities and dichotomies: Where do they show up?

Dualities and dichotomies: How do they show up? Smith and Lewis, 2022

Discussion How do dualities and dichotomies show up in your context? How do you respond to them?

March’s framework of exploitation and exploration March (1991) identified dualities as a characteristic of organisational learning EXPLOITATION: Using known / existing capacity for the purpose of efficiency e.g. known, v iability, resource allocation, cost savings, efficiencies, quality control, reliability, known, low risk, short term. EXPLORATION: Search for new knowledge and capacity, for the purpose of experimentation e.g. unknown, investment, innovation, R&D, collaboration outside organisation, flexibility, risk, longer term.

How can we respond?

Discussion What are the advantages of BOTH / AND thinking? What are the challenges to BOTH / AND thinking?

How can we respond? 1. AWARENESS Notice it and name it 2. ACCEPTANCE Dualities and dichotomies are a fact of education (and life) 3. STEP BACK AND SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE Work out what’s driving it and what’s behind it 4 . TAKE ‘ME’ OUT OF THE PICTURE Describe it objectively, and removing judgement and emotion 5. EITHER / OR How can you balance the duality? 6. BOTH / AND - REFRAME IT Reframe the question – how can you achieve both X and Y? 7. THE LEARNING IS IN THE TENSION What can you learn from it?

Discussion Reflect on a duality or dichotomy that has come up during this session and in pairs ask each other: BIGGER PICTURE Explore what’s behind it. Describe it objectively. EITHER / OR: How can you balance the duality? BOTH / AND: Reframe - How can you achieve both? THE LEARNING IN THE TENSION: What can you learn from it?

Feedback 1. What are your takeaways from the session? 2. What has been most useful about the session?
