The Parts of A Holy Mass

What is a Holy Mass? The Holy Mass is a central Catholic Church ritual and act of worship that is intended to bring people closer to God.  It is a sacrifice where Jesus Christ offers himself to God through a priest, and is meant to: Save souls - Make present the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ - Bring new graces into the world

What are the Parts / Order of the Holy Mass? The Order of the Mass includes the following: Introductory Rites Liturgy of the Word Liturgy of the Eucharist Concluding Rites

INTRODUCTORY RITES

INTRODUCTORY RITES Introductory rites are a series of events that take place at the beginning of a Mass to prepare the faithful to worship and celebrate the Eucharist. They help to unite the community of believers and establish communion.

INTRODUCTORY RITES The Introductory Rites include:  Entrance song: The first act of participation in the Mass, which announces the people's presence as members of the Body of Christ  Sign of the Cross: First signed before baptism  Greeting: The liturgical greeting and the people's response signify the presence of the Lord  Penitential Act: An acclamation of God's mercy and compassion  Gloria: A hymn of praise to God, sung or said on Sundays and important feast days  Collect Prayer: Concludes the Introductory Rites

LITURGY OF THE WORD

LITURGY OF THE WORD The Liturgy of the Word is a significant part of the Catholic Mass that involves the proclamation of Sacred Scripture. It's a time of divine revelation and personal transformation, and it leads to the offering of Jesus in the Eucharistic Prayer.

LITURGY OF THE WORD The Liturgy of the Word includes:  Scripture Readings The Liturgy of the Word is made up of Scripture readings, with three readings on Sundays and solemnities. The first reading is usually from the Old Testament, and the second is from a New Testament letter.  Gospel Acclamation The Gospel is proclaimed by a priest or deacon, and the congregation stands and sings the Gospel Acclamation to show the importance of the Gospel.

LITURGY OF THE WORD Creed The congregation recites one of the Church's official Creeds, such as the Nicene Creed on most Sundays.  Prayer of the Faithful Also known as the General Intercessions or Universal Prayer, this prayer is a sign of the communion between the local assembly and the wider Church.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Liturgy of the Eucharist is  a central part of the Christian Mass that commemorates Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples and the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ .

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Liturgy of the Eucharist includes:  Preparation of the gifts: Representatives of the congregation bring bread, wine, and sometimes financial gifts to the altar. The celebrant blesses the gifts and places them on the altar.  Eucharistic Prayer: The priest consecrates the bread and wine during the Eucharistic Prayer, which includes the Epiclesis and the Institution narrative and consecration. The Epiclesis is when the priest asks God to send the Holy Spirit upon the gifts. The Institution narrative and consecration recalls the actions of Jesus on the night before his death.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST Holy Communion: The congregation receives the consecrated bread and wine in Holy Communion. The minister says "The body of Christ" or "The blood of Christ", and the congregation responds "Amen".

CONCLUDING RITES

CONCLUDING RITES The Concluding Rites are  a brief but important part of the Catholic Mass that sends people forth to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and carry out their baptismal call.

CONCLUDING RITES The Concluding Rites include:  Thanking God: People say "Thanks be to God" in response to everything they have received, including God's presence, forgiveness of sins, the Word of God, and the Eucharist.  Being sent: People are charged to go into the world and make disciples.

CONCLUDING RITES Dismissal rites: These include the priest-celebrant and deacon kissing the altar, the priest-celebrant making a bow to the altar, and the priest-celebrant genuflecting to the tabernacle and processing out of the church.

Let’s Review!

REVIEW The Holy Mass is made up of four main parts:  Introductory Rites The Mass begins with the procession of the priest, altar boys, lectors, and communion ministers.  Liturgy of the Word The proclamation, teaching, and exhortation of Christ. This includes the First and Second Readings, the Gospel, and the Homily.  Liturgy of the Eucharist Also known as the Meal sharing, this is when the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus.  Concluding Rites The Mass ends with the Final Blessing, where the Priest blesses the congregation and sends them out.

REVIEW In the Roman Rite, the Mass is made up of two principal parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It begins with the Introductory Rites and ends with the Concluding Rites. Another way of dividing a Mass is into its "ordinary" parts—those texts which, with some variations, are part of the Mass on a daily basis—and its "proper" parts—the texts of prayers and selection of Scripture readings proper to the specific feast, feria or other occasion being observed.
