◦To ask audience to buy/not to buy a certain product.
How to develop your persuasive
argument using the FOUR
strategies
◦Pathos: appeals to personal feelingssuch as fear, pity, and
anger.
◦Ethos: audiences respond to the speaker’s credibility,
competence, character, goodwill, and dynamism and the
credibilityof the evidence.
◦Logos: appeals to reason(logical arguments).
◦Mythos:appeals to the traditions and valuesof your culture,
legends, and folktales.
Pathos
◦“Emotional reasons to believe in something”
◦Listeners need to not only understand your ideas but also feel
something about them.
How:
Personalize the issue problem, topic.
Appeal to listeners’needs and values.
Bring material alive.
Ethos
◦Give your speakers an impression that
◦-you have integrity, credibility
-you can be trusted
-you have goodwill toward them
-you know what you’re talking about (personal
experience, studies….)
-you are committedto the topic
Logos
The heart of an argument
◦-Rational or logical proof and evidence
Logical proof = arguments, reasoning, and
evidence to support claims
Evidence = examples, testimony, statistics,
analogies, visual aids, and etc.
How to construct your
persuasive presentation
1- Create an Awareness of the problem/issue
◦Inform your audience why you are talking to them about this issue,
product……..
2- offer your solution/issue/ device/ phenomenon
- Give the audience the details they need
- offer you argument
3- use the reasoning methods discussed above
Tips for a good
persuasive presentation
◦1- give a multisided presentation of your topic
◦Acknowledge the arguments on the other side
◦Show respect at all times for the opposition
◦Motivate audience interest in your subject by alluding to:
(use one or more of the following):
◦The practical value of the information for your audience
◦A reason to listen
◦The audience’s sense of curiosity
- Establish your credibility by:
◦Alluding to any first-hand experience you may have had
◦Alluding to sources of information you have consulted
◦Use a balance between formal and semi formal styles
• Avoid colloquialisms (“sort of” or “kinda”).
• Try to avoid ‘erms’ and ‘ums’.
• Try to speak more slowly than you would normally.
• Use pauses for emphasis (as opposed to raising your
voice)
• Don’t let your voice fade away at the end of
sentences.
◦Reduce your Anxiety
◦The easiest way to reduce anxiety is to have a well prepared
and well rehearsed presentation.
◦Make eye contact
◦Talk clearly to the back of the audience.
◦Don’t mumble the ends of sentences.
◦Be enthusiastic, animated and alive (or pretend…) and act
the part
How to choose your
topic
◦Research thoroughly
◦Think about all of the different viewpoints related
◦Tailor to your audience - discussing your topic with others is a
helpful way to gain an understanding of your audience.
◦Consider your credibility for presenting this topic - to persuade
the audience you need to convince them of your ethos meaning
that you need to convince them that you can be trusted. Ask
yourself:
◦How involved are you with this topic ?
◦Do you have personal experience in it? How many years?
◦How long have you been interested in the area?
