The role of Media in Education MUNEERA. TV

The media play a dominant role in the learning process. ... The role of Print Media in the process of education is of special importance. Print Media like Newspapers, Journals and Magazines are the basic oldest channels of communication between one source to other.

Media is everywhere, it has become a part of our daily life. The media play a dominant role in the learning process. Media has potential to shape personalities, change the way we perceive and understand the world and our immediate reality

Role of print media in education Print Media in Education, is a world-wide programme whereby newspapers and magazines are used to promote education in school classrooms. In most overseas countries newspaper-in-education programmes (NIE) dominate while magazines play a secondary educational role.

Most schools lack sufficient written resources. It is a well-known fact that because over 90% of the education budget is spent on salaries, very little money is left over to supply schools with textbooks and other written resources. WHY USE NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES IN OUR CLASSROOMS?

Newspapers and magazines are useful in promoting the new Curriculum because: They provide a rounded education in that they cover all the learning areas in the curriculum and much more; They contain news and features on politics, sport, consumer issues, education, business, the weather, advertising, environmental details, community issues and so on; They entertain and inform at the same time and the activity method which is used promotes learner participation; They are the only "textbooks" that are completely consumable instructional tools. They can be cut up, marked on, separated, torn and recycled;

They are ideal for focusing on values and appropriate attitudes. Their use creates a bridge between the ‘real world’ outside and the classroom because they are up-to-date and link closely with the lives of people in the community. They offer on-going education for life.

Newspapers and magazines promote literacy Research has demonstrated that if young people and adults are encouraged to read newspapers and magazines, it often leads to a life-long habit of reading all sorts of other printed material too. Newspapers and magazines are relatively inexpensive and are therefore particularly useful in sparking off a passion for reading. One of our products, the Reading Passport, is particularly useful in achieving this. Many companies in South Africa are now sponsoring the cost of supplying newspapers to previously disadvantaged schools.

Textbooks are very expensive and in schools where they are absent or out-of-date, newspapers and magazines can fill the gap. They can also be used to supplement textbooks but are not intended to replace the traditional textbook. Newspapers and magazines are affordable

Role of electronic media in education Television Television has been given considerable importance in many countries as a source and a tool of teaching. The success stories of using television for education in many countries has negated the concept that television is basically on entertainment oriented medium and it is hostile to thoughts. Television is adaptable and can follow different approaches when used in the different educational situations. The medium is used for formal, non-formal and informal education .

Role of television is neither fixed nor easily tangible and measurable. The role is directly related to the question of how the planners are serious and determined to use television. The role could either be enormous or, on the contrary very meager depending upon the specific tasks and available resources. Generally television can help to achieve the following objectives: a) Social quality in education b) Enhance quality in education c) Reduce dependency on verbal teaching and teachers d) Provide flexibility of time and space in learning. e) Stimulates learning f) Provide mass education opportunities.

The Internet in education can expand the knowledge of students, teachers, and parents. Parents can analyze what is most important to teach a kid in a particular time. ... The Internet provides the facilities for students to do the experiments, research, and development. Role of internet in education

Enhanced Lessons Teachers can make use of the Internet by giving students extra resources and material from the Internet, such as interactive lessons and educational games. Many college courses use a "hybrid" model where many lessons are done online, requiring fewer in-class meetings. This saves students from having to commute to campus with their heavy textbooks every day. Tests, homework, collaboration with students and research can all be done from any computer with Internet access. Even for non-hybrid classes, the Internet is used as an addition to normal studies.

Study and Research The Internet contains a wealth of knowledge that is available instantly upon any search. Because of this, the Internet has superseded libraries as a source for information gathering and research. Many teachers will now ask students to visit specific websites to study from home, and online encyclopedias provide masses of knowledge on almost every topic imaginable. The variety of sources allows students to pursue subjects in much greater detail rather than being limited to whatever the teacher sends home.

Communication It used to be that students that forgot work, missed a lecture or couldn't remember an assignment were out of luck until talking face to face with a teacher or a classmate. However, the Internet allows instantaneous connection to your classmates and teachers. Improving communication between students and teachers allows teachers to assist students without having to stay after class. It also allows for students to have greater efficiency when working on projects with their peers when everyone cannot attend or asking for clarification when something is unclear.

Conclusion We can rightly conclude that the effect of media is vast on the life of each and every individual. With the ongoing development of information and technology in the society, media has given particular attention to the need of education and cultural diversity and promoted media consciousness among individuals. Last but not the least , media has opened a new dimension and gave a new meaning to education. Education has become more entertaining like never before.
