Early Education in Biñan In June 1869, Jose Rizal bid farewell to his family in Calamba and journeyed to Biñan with his brother Paciano. They traveled in a Carromata, arriving at their aunt's house where Jose would reside. Rizal's life in Biñan was simple yet methodical, marked by his first school brawl, painting lessons, and academic excellence. He quickly rose to become the best student in his school, showcasing his intellectual prowess. After a year and a half, Rizal's schooling in Biñan concluded. He received news from his sister Saturnina about the steamer Talim, which would transport him back to Calamba. Before his departure, he prayed at the town church, collected pebbles as souvenirs, and bid farewell to his teachers and classmates, leaving Biñan on December 17, 1870.

Ateneo de Manila: Academic Excellence Following the tragic death of Gom-Bur-Za, Rizal pursued his studies at Ateneo Municipal in Manila. His first day began with a Holy Mass at the college chapel. Despite starting at the bottom of his class, he quickly ascended to become the "emperor" by the end of the month. During his second year, Rizal foresaw his mother's release from prison, a prophecy that came true. Inspired by Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, Rizal excelled in his studies and developed a passion for poetry. He graduated with the highest honors in 1877, marking the end of his schooling at Ateneo. He also read "Travels in the Philippines" by Dr. Feodor Jagor, which impressed him with its observations on the defects of Spanish colonization.

Medical Studies at University of Santo Tomas After his first year in Philosophy and Letters, Rizal transitioned to medical studies at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Despite his mother's initial opposition, his father and brother Paciano supported his decision. During his time at UST, Rizal experienced the brutality of a Spanish officer, fell in love with Miss L, and penned "To the Filipino Youth," showcasing his literary talents. Rizal's studies at UST were marked by both academic achievements and personal challenges. He grew increasingly disillusioned with the Dominican institution, citing its outdated methods of instruction and the racial prejudice exhibited by Dominican professors towards Filipino students.

Secret Mission to Spain Disgusted with the educational system at UST, Rizal decided to continue his studies abroad, a decision he knew his parents would not favor. Without seeking their blessing, he embarked on a secret mission to observe the life, culture, languages, customs, industries, commerce, government, and laws of European nations. His goal was to prepare himself for the liberation of his people from Spanish tyranny. Rizal's departure for Spain was shrouded in secrecy to avoid detection by Spanish authorities and friars. He used the name Jose Mercado and wrote farewell letters to his parents and sweetheart, Leonor Rivera. On May 3, 1882, he boarded the Spanish steamer Salvadora, bound for Singapore, with tears in his eyes and a heavy heart.

Travels in Singapore and Europe Singapore During his voyage to Singapore, Rizal carefully observed the people and surroundings on board the steamer. He befriended the ship's captain, Donato Lecha, and played chess to pass the time. Upon arriving in Singapore on May 9, he stayed at Hotel de la Paz and explored the city, visiting the Botanical Garden, Buddhist temples, shopping districts, and the statue of Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles. Barcelona Rizal's initial impression of Barcelona was unfavorable, but he soon grew to appreciate the city's atmosphere of freedom and liberalism. He enjoyed strolling along Las Ramblas and wrote his first article on Spanish soil, "Amor Patrio," which was published in Diariong Tagalog.

Madrid, Paris, and Germany In Madrid, Rizal led a simple life, focusing on his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid, where he took courses in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters. He also studied painting and sculpture, practiced fencing and shooting, and took lessons in French, German, and English. He had a brief love affair with Consuelo Ortiga y Perez. Rizal visited Paris in June 1883, where he was captivated by the city's scenery and culture. He closely observed the French way of life and spent hours in museums. In 1885, he worked as an apprentice of Dr. Louis de Weckert, a leading French ophthalmologist, to improve his knowledge in ophthalmology. After completing his studies in Spain and Paris, Rizal traveled to Germany to specialize in ophthalmology, driven by his desire to cure his mother's eye ailment. He continued his secret mission, observing European customs and lifestyles to prepare himself for serving his homeland.

Switzerland and Italy From Rheinfall, Rizal and Viola journeyed to Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and continued their tour to Basel, Bern, and Lausanne. They visited Geneva, a beautiful Swiss city frequented by tourists. Rizal was captivated by the scenic beauty of Switzerland and its peaceful atmosphere. Rizal then traveled to Italy, visiting Turin, Milan, Venice, and Florence. He reached Rome on June 27, 1887, and was thrilled by the sights and memories of the Eternal City. He visited the Vatican and was impressed by the magnificent edifices, particularly St. Peter's Church. After a week in Rome, he prepared to return to the Philippines, eager to apply his knowledge and experiences to the service of his people.
