The United Arab Emirates is a country located within the Middle East and makes up one of the seven countries in the Arabian Peninsula. On 2 nd December 1971 the UAE was formed from six initial emirates. These emirates included Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al-Quwain, Ajman and Fujairah. The UAE was completed with seven emirates on 10 th February 1972 when Ras Al Kaimah joined, forming the federal state. The UAE and Its Seven Emirates .

The ruler of Abu Dhabi is Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is also the president of the UAE. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate in the UAE. Some famous landmarks found in Abu Dhabi are Yas Island, The Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace and the F1 circuit. The majority of the land in Abu Dhabi is made up of desert also known as The Arabian Desert or Empty Quarter ( Rub Al Khali in Arabic). The ruler of Dubai is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He is also the vice president of the UAE. Some famous landmarks in Dubai include the world’s highest building, the Burj Khalifa as well as the Burj al Arab and The Palm. Dubai is home to many different nationalities and just under 3 million people live there.  Dubai Did you know?  Dubai International Airport holds the title of the busiest airport in the world. Sharjah is the third largest and third most populous emirate in the UAE. This emirate has the famous towns of Khor Fakkan and Kalba . Sharjah is the only emirate in the UAE that shares a border with all the other emirates, and is the third most popular emirate within the UAE. Sharjah Did you know?  The word ‘Sharjah’ translates to ‘rising sun’ in Arabic. Flag of Sharjah

Umm al Quwain is the least populous of the seven emirates. This emirate is home to Umm al Quwain Fort and Seneyah Island. The emirate shares a border with Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah and has beautiful mangroves along its coast. Umm Al-Quwain Did you know?  The word ‘Quwain’ in Arabic means ‘iron’. Flag of Umm Al-Quwain

Ajman is the smallest emirate in the UAE. Be sure to visit Ajman Museum and Wasit Nature Reserve if you are in this emirate. Ajman also has beautiful mangroves along its coast which are perfect for kayaking through. Ajman Did you know?  Lots of people visit Ajman for its long strip of white sand beach. Flag of Ajman

Fujairah is the only emirate in the UAE that has a coastline on the Gulf of Oman and The Arabian Gulf. This emirate holds the grand Fujairah Castle as well as Dibba Beach. Fujairah is known for its beautiful beaches, snorkelling and scuba diving. Fujairah Did you know?  Fujairah is home to one of the oldest forts in The United Arab Emirates. Flag of Fujairah

Ras al Khaimah translates from Arabic into English as ‘headland of the small huts’. Here you will find the some of the highest mountains in the UAE, including the Hajer mountains. Ras Al Khaimah was the last of the emirates to join the UAE when it became part of the union on 10 th February 1972.
