THEORIES AND PRINCIPLES OF AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT By: Gwen E. Beltran Mikee Angela C. Cabi- oc Kristyl Joy A. Morales Lord Valerie B. Perez

OBJECTIVES: Determine the theories that supports Authentic Assessment Explain and discuss the principles of an Authentic Assessment 1 2

PRAGMATISM by John Dewey THEORIES Emphasize the need to learn by doing or experience To Dewey, the role of the teacher is to be more of a facilitator than an instructor. Children were expected to learn context that was relevant to their real-world life.

C ONSTRUCTIVISM by Jean Piaget THEORIES Suggests that learners construct knowledge out of their experience. It promotes active learning or learning by doing. Emphasizes experimentation, research projects, field trip, and class discussions.

PRINCIPLES Authentic assessment is both process-and product-oriented. 1 2 Authentic assessment should focus on higher-order cognitive outcomes. 3 Authentic assessment can include a measure of noncognitive learning outcomes.

PRINCIPLES Authentic assessment should reflect real-life or real-world contexts. 4 5 Authentic assessment must be comprehensive and holistic. 6 Authentic assessment should lead to student learning.

Summary Authentic assessment is a powerful tool that helps students develop real-world skills, fosters self-awareness, and promotes meaningful learning. By integrating these principles into our classrooms, we ensure that assessments are not just about grades but about growth, development, and success.
