Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. Can you think of some reasons we would need to measure temperature?

Temperature can be measured with a thermometer. Temperature is measured in degrees.

Temperature is measured in degrees. The United States measures degrees in Fahrenheit (˚F). Most countries around the world measure degrees in Celsius (˚C).

The red liquid inside a thermometer is mercury. When the bar is closer to the top, it is hotter. When the bar is closer to the bottom, it is colder.

If the numbers on the thermometer are counting by 10 , then each notch HALF way between numbers is worth 5. The notch below is 75˚. The notch above is 85˚. The temperature is 80˚. 5˚

The numbers on the thermometer are counting by 10s, but there are 5 degrees in between each ten. When you count the notches, count by twos . The notch below is 28˚C. The notch above is 32˚C. The temperature is 30˚C. 2˚

Find the unit of measure. Is it ˚F or ˚C? 2. What is the scale? Are the notches counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s? 3. Go to the last marked number and then count the notches using the pattern. What temperature is shown on the thermometer? 50˚F
